Yeah, just look for that added ledge along the aperture ring, and the holed-out metering prongs. Although, some folks have just changed or drilled out the prongs, thinking that was the only thing needed.

Third party AI hacks are evident (no engraved AI scale), and so are AI-S lenses (orange smallest aperture figure) and of course non-AI lenses (continuous aperture ring at full flange depth).
But often only the serial number or tiny details like screw head types will tell whether it is a originally AI lens or a AI kit modified K lens.

In that case, I think I'm mostly going to be in stopped-down mode. Looks as if only my 105 and my 200 are the real deal, so:
1. set aperture
2. focus
3. set shutter speed while holding DOF preview lever in with third hand.
4. let go of lever and shoot picture.
Is there any way this will become instinctive?

Anything becomes instinctive if you practice.(Manual transmission anyone?)
Once upon a time there were also pre-set lenses where you would focus wide open and then rotate a second ring to stop the lens down. And rotate it again to open it.

based on this thread I bought an EM. It's a great little camera. I took it skiing this weekend and it fit nicely into a coat pocket with the 50 1.8 e series lens. I liked it so much I bought this

The em came with new seals and battery. I would recommend the camera and this seller. It's a real pleasure to have a pocket sized Nikon , and the e series lens and camera are an underpriced gem. I paid 32 $ for the em!!,
I plan on using these cameras on a trip to New Orleans, with a 50 on one and the 28 on another. tri x 400 in the em and velvia in the fg.

I have owned 2 FG cameras. They are robust, and can do just about any exposure mode, except for S mode. Their P mode works fine, as does the OTF flash metering. Stick any Nikon flash on it, and it will deliver a perfectly exposed negative.
