Though I generally agree with your point, I think the digital split prism function on the X100s indicates that they have given MF some serious thought. Whether it turns out to be well implemented or not, I am not sure.

francisco, keep in mind that all three cameras you mentioned were INTENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER to be autofocus cameras! all the bellyaching and countless moaning about their lack of manual focus ability totally misses this single and essential point. manual focus on these cameras is INTENDED as an afterthought.

if manual focus is your primary interest, i strongly suggest the ricoh gxr m mount as a complement to your film M camera and lenses, or the epson rd1 or M8 for 'rangefinder' shooting experience. unlike the fuji X line, the manufacturers INTENDED these cameras to be used in manual focus! an educated consumer is the best guard against disappointment!

youre right roma, that does indicate a great deal of seriousness to the manual focus experience. i guess i'm just personally not excited about it in a fixed lens AF cam, but what you say is right on point. if executed correctly its really a boon to fujis interchangeable lens cams, imo.

In a moment of weakness I clicked on the "place your order" button in Amazon and bought a used Fuji X100, a new lens ring and hood, and an SD card. They should be coming in on Wednesday. Who knows, maybe I like it... If not, there's always the choice to return the stuff.

First thing you do when the X100 gets there is go to Fujifilm's website and download the latest version of the firmware and install it. It'll make a world of positive difference.

FYI, If you get the X100 give the M-AFL method of focusing a try.
Set the Auto Focus to "M" Then in the "Set" Menu set the "AE/AF-Lock Button" to "AF Lock Only" This will give you a large single AF area in the center of the viewfinder (Optical or Electric) / back LCD.
With this set up focus is controlled by pressing the AFL/AEL button while metering/exposure is controlled by the shutter release, making the focusing and exposure two separate steps much like shooting with a traditional manual focus camera.

congrats on the purchase, I loved my X100 on the 4 weeks of owning it (sold it to a friend to fund my X100s purchase)
Always had mine set to center-focusing, on battery mode for a bright clean viewfinder and disabled preview image.
this gave me an RF experience but with AF which made it easier to take quick shots.

One thing I noticed is that at low light, it tends to focus on the background even though you are trying to shoot the person on the foreground, so I learned that at low light, it's best to shoot on EVF mode just to be sure it's focusing to the right subject.
