With several other RFF members, I saw the new Gary Winogrand exhibit at San Francisco MOMA. Its superb... not to be missed if you like street photography and/or if you want to see what a great photography exhibit can look like.
There are hundreds of prints in the show and I'd say at least half I'd never seen before (and I have MANY of Winogrand's books). The print quality is outstanding. And the curator's explanatory text is excellent - lots of interesting background.
I can't remember seeing a better photography exhibit. Have a look if you can.

If you're a Winogrand fan it definitely is well worth the trip to SF. A huge collection of his work with 1st ever seen prints accounting for nearly 1/3 of the exhibited items.
The show takes you through a fascinating visual trip through the 50's, 60's, 70's and into the 80's when GW met with an early end.
The show really surprised me with it's scope, massive.

It stinks that the exhibit won't make its way east until 2014. I don't know if I can wait that long--I might need to take a trip west before June. I really like Winogrand's work. He makes it tough for me to enjoy a lot of so-called street photography.

Saw it yesterday as well. Great show. Also caught the Tod Papageorge lecture (many in attendance....Friedlander, Wessel, Richard Benson) and picked up the book. I'll spend some time with the book and then go back for another look.

Friedlander was there??? I didn't see him. Very bummed if I didn't see him nearby.

One thing that surprised me a bit about the show were the never-shown-before images.
I knew about this beforehand, but expected them to be pretty much all from his late, unfinished work. There were actually many "New" images from the 50's, 60's and early seventies as well. These were all labelled as to whether Winogrand had flagged them on the contact sheets or not.

I assumed they would all be later images as well but was pleasantly surprised to see them spread across the timeline. I'm glad they indicated whether GW had expressed interest in the images.
