Leica M11 Information

Although there is a general trend from camera manufacturers towards more pixels, it seemed to be plateauing for a while. Leica are a small manufacturer and their sensors are made by CMOSIS. It is possible that as the production run of the sensor in the M10-R finished and CMOSIS started a new production run of a new sensor, Leica had little choice but to go with the new one, which might happen to be 60MP. If the output characteristics are equivalent but there are more pixels, why not?

There are A LOT of people that believe in supernatural things and plenty of ways to profit from it, but that doesn't mean they can't use reason and facts on other parts of their life ;).
You can't deny that Leica does suck ... the money out of your bank account. For some people the experience is worth it though. Even though I feel M11 is moving in a good direction such as with an updated external EVF, I also agree with the spirit-whisperer that the future should be hybrid viewfinders.
 
More megapixels is inevitable. I find it funny that people get so worked up about it like no alternatives exist. Keep your old gear and old computer. Realize Leica has to cater to those that use it, not those who do not and only talk about it. Also the minute Leica decides to abandon the OVF/RF combo, will be the day when Leica is just another camera company. A hybrid VF will just make this camera $15000 instead.

And what exactly is wrong with keeping it because you might need it later? That is just smart for some purposes. I just do not understand those who think because they do not need it, others do not either.

Given the low cost of storage and back up options along the speed of current data-transfer hardware, keeping all the data isn't a bad idea.

Leica Rumors published a spec sheet that describes in-camera, lossless DNG compression.

There is a DNG + JPEG mode as well. So, one could review the JPEGs and only save a L-DNG for keepers.

Soon we will have the actual spec.

I am no software engineer, but "interpolated" sounds lossy to me. Isn't "interpolate" a fancy word for "fabricate"? Of course, you can have lossless compression after the interpolation. You can have lossless compression of a jpg too, but jpgs are already so compressed you are probably not going to decrease the file size very much.

depending what they they actually do they could get very high quality files with smaller pixel dimensions, but it all depends. Perhaps they’ll explain in tomorrow’s launch.

There’s nothing I’ve seen about it that would deter me, apart from the price. That is variously a choice or not a choice, but having sold my M9 and MM after suffering a sensor failure and knowing that Leica wouldn’t replace the next ones free of charge, I’m stocking film RFs for the next while. Digital is (now) mirrorless and using MF lenses.

Indeed, no argument from me. But I haven't seen any prominent churches also reviewing cameras. When you paint with a broad brush, paint is liable to spill.

Leicas are cheap in comparison to microscopes, spectrophotometers, polymerase chain reaction thermocyclers and many other pieces of equipment I need to buy pretty often. I recently replaced the camera on our Zeiss stereo microscope here at work and it cost a lot more than a Leica. Everything is relative.

Interpolation is a statistical method by which related known values are used to estimate an unknown undefined data point within the limits of the data set. Interpolated values from good data sets are often more accurate than single measurements. Smaller size, interpolated files - for example a 20mp RAW file from a 60mp total capture, should be of better quality than a 20mp RAW file from a 20mp sensor with similar characteristics to the 60mp sensor. Very high quality scientific digital cameras work either by interpolation or computationally merging multiple exposures.

Tips for dealing with trolls:
Starve them. It's totally understandable to want to wage a war on trolls with your keyboard, but trolls thrive on others' anger, frustration and annoyance.

Incremental update. I agree with the changes they made from the M10, and I'm glad they didn't change a lot because the M10 was and still is an excellent camera. This looks like another winner to me.
