Leica M11 Information

Metering is via the Sensor only and a Sandwiched cover glass is used.

Noise levels are affected dramatically by sensor temperature. In rangefinder mode, the sensor must be active just to provide metering. Sandwiched cover glass is a technique used to combine a glass with properties affected by humidity with a protective glass used to shield the bottom layer from humidity. Such as using S8612 with a BS7 cover. Maybe Leica has a different reason, we'll know in a few years if the bottom layer starts corroding like on the M9.

Interpolation is a statistical method by which related known values are used to estimate an unknown undefined data point within the limits of the data set. Interpolated values from good data sets are often more accurate than single measurements. Smaller size, interpolated files - for example a 20mp RAW file from a 60mp total capture, should be of better quality than a 20mp RAW file from a 20mp sensor with similar characteristics to the 20mp sensor. Very high quality scientific digital cameras work either by interpolation or computationally merging multiple exposures.

Exactly! As explained by Camera West TV presenter Carlo, what this does is group many pixels together to create larger pixels, which in turn enhances the low light capabilities of the sensor, in turn producing better looking images. So you're still using the full 60mp on the sensor, just in a different configuration.

I for one like the improvements in the M11, but it's now priced out of even my dream zone. Gotta start playing the Lottery again.

B&H has it priced at $8995 plus tax, so in most places it will sneak in at under $10,000.

£7,500 in the UK - less than the £8,500 I half expected. Still not a bargain camera, but the only way to shoot a rangefinder digitally with a new body.

On the launch livestream they commented that the shutter suffered no delay compared to that of the M10 even though it starts open for metering. It made me smile to think of the rubberised cloth shutters in my M4 and MDa and how slow and primitive they are in comparison.

This^^^. I’m quite happy with my 2019 ME 240, but when it gives up the ghost I’ll go looking for an M10, and will be happy if, in the meantime, M10 prices have dropped bc of the M11.

I must be an idiot to skip the technical talk...but I had to just shake my head when I saw that the USB-C connector--the one that will communicate with a computer when you don't use a USB card and also charge the camera itself--on the bottom of the camera. So...I shoot all day with this $9k beauty, plug it into my computer...and lay it on it's rear screen while I'm working.

Absolutely! ^^^^^ This. I don't get all the negativity. I really don't. It does seem to me like the jump in resolution from my M9 to the M11 is enough to matter. And I want Leica around to keep making products that I like. They are a tiny company and can use all the wins that they can get. In fact, I would posit the fact that they are so small is related, in part, to their high prices.

So if you all are so unhappy (or unimpressed) with the advent of this new camera, what do you actually want them to do?

BTW, if you have good high ISO performance, why do you need IBIS? I have it in a bunch of cameras, and it is not a panacea.

There is a difference between investigating and taking money from people for a small amplifier with some lights and a receiver. I mention this whenever its author comes up.

Tips for dealing with trolls:
Starve them. It's totally understandable to want to wage a war on trolls with your keyboard, but trolls thrive on others' anger, frustration and annoyance.

I raise this each time because I find that people say "I didn't know that" when I link to the paranormal site. I see it as awareness raising. My personal view is that I would not believe anyone who makes money by telling people that he can speak to the dead about anything. My general view is that anyone who looks at his camera reviews should be aware of the paranormal site. I don't see how that is trolling, and I will continue this awareness raising work.

The M11 will be expensive and 60mp may be hard to hold still. I already have an M10M, and, for me, given that all the things about earlier Leica digital Ms that annoyed me were fixed in the M10, I think Topaz AI Gigapixel would be better value than a new camera.

Given Steve Huff's history with Leicas, the pertinent questions are:

1. Will he buy the M11?
2. If so, how long after he buys it will he sell it?
3. How long after he sells it will he re-buy it?
4. How long after he re-buys it will he re-sell it again?
5. ...

Seriously, the M11 looks terrific. If someone gave me one, along with a couple of Leica lenses, I would happily use it.

I have not been following this discussion about someone's belief in the afterlife. There are so many faiths which aver connections with the departed and messages and directions from them that to condemn one means you are close to condemning them all. The Bill of Rights covers this and while some might not agree with it the BoR is the law of the land. Further, I really do not give a fig about any beliefs someone has if they can speak knowledgeably on the subject they consider themselves experts on. No, this does not mean I endorse tyrants, monsters, lunatic cult leaders or so on. I just support any and all to believe whatever they wish so long as they harm no one so doing. As usual, YMMV. But wait, isn't this about the M11? Let's get on with that and start another thread for metaphysics, philosophy, religion and associated ideas. Sounds like a plan to me.
