My new (to me) Contax II from 1937, with more modern Jupiter 3.
Unfortunately after a dozen shots of my first test roll, the take-up spool stopped rotating, so the film jammed. I managed to save the film though and set it up to finish in my Nikon S3. Sent the Contax to get the spool gear repaired. In the meantime while it comes back, I'm waiting to receive a Sonnar f2 and also looking into purchasing a Sonnar f1.5 from the same year of the camera!

Thank you! I am really happy with the IIa so far. My only gripe: for such a nice camera, Zeiss could have made a nicer take-up spool 🙁

My two Contax IIa camera (RD left, BD right). The Black Dial was recently acquired in a round-about way from the RFF marketplace, thanks to Sonnar Brian.
It needed a little bit of TLC to bring the slow speeds back on track. Only remaining issue is a slight vertical misalignment in the RF.

Here’s my IIIa. I’ve actually used the 1/1250 speed (it has minor capping which manifests at the top of the image). I’ve also used it with flash. A magnificent camera and one of the best 50mm lenses ever made. As I once wrote elsewhere, I appreciate the workmanship and attention to fine detail on Contaxes, and the gear-driven slats of the shutter are alluring, but they have more chrome than a 1955 Buick Roadmaster!

I have a IIIA from 1961 or 60 (last production) and the take-up spool pivot has a holder clip so the spool doesn't fall down unexpectedly. A great ergonomic improvement!!

This is a good moment to send it for a service to a good camera technician. He/she can use the following link for orientation:

​​​​​​However, your camera will probably work just fine after the technician just relubes the parts moved by the 1st and 2nd curtains, with no further adjustment needed.

This camera isn't complex at all (save for the flash sync system), only misunderstood and underdocumented.
