Some years ago, a large Thai supermarket chain opened a store in downtown Saigon and the manager eventually employed two staff to show people how to use the escalator.

The late Rick Lang, once a bit of a mentor, had a 10+ year ongoing series of the culture of the deep south of the US as it was expressed by signs. This scene was one of his keystone photos. A few years after he died, I drove around a corner in Helena Arkansas 800+ miles from home, to find this location of his photo. This is my photo which is very similar to his but has been filed away for15 years as it will always be known as my copy of his photo.

"Promote Industrialization - Modernize the Countryside", Saigon. This side of the giant billboards faced a mangrove swamp while on the city side, they showed advertisements for Heineken and Mercedes Benz. In the meantime, they were taken down to make way for luxury condos. Leica ME - Zeiss Biogon T* 2.8/28 ZM.

I have eaten there a dozen times over the years. The restaurant gets a lot of free foreign press because they supposedly donate a percentage to charity. Good food and free condoms.
