FYI -- forum updates

I'd like to see things get settled, change for the sake of change is getting a little irksome.
RFF changes are certainly not for the sake of change, rather they are as needed.

Like most other forums, RFF would not exist without the mods.

ALL their efforts make the community possible.

This is normal behavior.
That's not actually true. Earlier this year "What are you listening to" and "NYC journal" used to appear on the Latest page. When they didn't it prompted Calzone to restart his thread because he thought his original had been cancelled. Then we all realised his original thread appeared in New posts.

That's because his topic was moved to off-topic, where it should have been from day one. @Sonnar Brian pointed this out and moved it.

(From the first post: in the spirit of promoting a “safe place” where we can further develop our friendships further, communicate off-topic)

I don't know the history of 'what are you listening to' but it clearly is also off-topic.

In any case, the off-topic forum was removed from the Latest Posts widget but is still in the New Posts widget.

Ergo, it is currently normal behavior! 😀

We know there are bots.
Never the less, the numbers have gone up steadily. Now past 7500

Yes I understand but what does that number mean? Who are those guest and where do their IP Addresses emanate?

Over 9,000 "guests" currently but under listing on "Members" menu, there is currently no listing for Guests or Robots unless that feature is turned off. Just curious... Maybe it's none of our business. 😎 1753086986773.png

So complain if you wish; others here are thankful!

Not really a very professional reply for a 'Staff' member, having been a Moderator for a Mac forum with many more members than here I know how it works behind the curtain.

People are allowed to complain without having the finger pointed at them and made to feel less important than other members, after all, regardless of how many volunteers or moderators etc are involved, without the members contributions you wouldn't have a forum.

You also need to learn better how to have a sly dig at members instead of hiding it behind a not funny 'joke'

We welcome feedback, even complaints, and others are thankful, for example:

Nothing special to report but I would like to take the opportunity to thanks all the volunteers who let RFF be alive! Thanks, grazie!

So this is just a statement of fact.

No digs were made at anyone, no one is lesser or greater, we are all here to discuss rangefinders, aren't we? Admins and mods sometimes screw up (or more likely, often screw up😁) so when that happens, please lighten up a bit and realize we are all donating our time here, mods/admins and members alike...thank you.

Well said, Robert, that's how I feel too!

I appreciate the mods and admins very much. They've always been responsive to my requests and on more than one occasion have helped me clean up my messes.

I think RFF is pretty damn good place and the price of admission is free! Can't complain about that!

All the best,
Mike

Same as before, edit time for well-established members (250 posts) is 24 hours.

'same as before...' (?)

'before', Edit is On for own post All the time, not just 24 hrs

i am here Since 2003, w 10,800 posts...

i wish it truly is 'Same as before', well,

if no one else is 'complaining', yea, cut the 'Edit', me need to Learn about...'i don't care Either'

Shortly after the new software was installed, the edit time was set to 24 hours. So it has been that way for over 2 years, not sure what it was before that with the ancient vbulletin software as I wasn't a mod then.

I do know that years ago (having been a member since 2007) many of the settings had been left at software defaults, which meant that members could delete their own posts. This resulted in entire threads disappearing (delete the first post in the thread, and the entire thread goes.) In this case other members had hundreds of posts disappear by no action of their own. So to prevent that scenario when the Xenforo software was installed, the relevant permissions were discussed by mods and management and set to where they are now. So that's the history of the 24 hour edit. Of course you can always use the report button to summon a mod if there is a need to have a post edited beyond this time period.

The 'OP delete first post resulting all thread gone' was a Long time ago (10 Years?) excuse...

Again, i'm not going to loose sleep on this Edit thingy, 24 hrs, Okay! case close...

until you put out Untrue info ( i know your Edit is always On )

@splitimageview , @CameraQuest , and anyone else responsible for keeping this place up and running. Please know that I truly appreciate any and all work that you do here.

By and large, I think that you all do a fantastic job. I’ve owned a motorcycle forum for well over a decade that I have always funded myself, never monetizing it. Still some complain. I suppose it is inevitable — most visitors of online forums these days tend to be old men (I count myself among them), many of whom that are often lonely and at times a bit cranky. The most disheartening thing I’ve had to deal with was a member of my forum that hassled me and threatened to sue me simply because he did not like being mildly scolded for his bad behavior. Despite the moaning of some, just try to remember that the majority of people around here likely appreciate you all very much.

24 hours provides more than enough time to be able to edit a post in my opinion. In addition to the reasons already provided above, hopefully members knowing that they can’t go back and “rewrite history” will lead to them thinking a bit more before posting things in the heat of the moment.

Thanks again and keep up all of the good work!

Please go back to this thread:

From that thread you will see that members that are part of the 'Contributor' group were set to have unlimited post editing.

As I posted in this thread as well as in the linked thread:

Admins and mods sometimes screw up (or more likely, often screw up😁)

I've been testing some various features and may have screwed things up, as I do from time to time.

In any case, the Contributor group now has regained unlimited editing privileges, taking us back to March 8, 2024!

😀

As a former moderator, I would have thought you would know this: While they might take input from members up to a point, it is the admins and the moderators of any given forum who set the tone and decide what is appropriate or not. Yes members are vital to any forum. But for every forum member who feels the need to complain there are many more who are actually happy with the way things are.

And members needn’t make veiled threats of leaving here 🙄, as they are free to do so any time they wish. But try to remember that it can work both ways as @CameraQuest could one day decide to leave, perhaps taking the entire forum with him.

In the words of Sergeant Hulka “lighten up Francis”.

Of course moderators always have option to edit! That’s their job.

Why is it important to be able to edit after a day? Most replies are outdated after a couple of days.

Now, this site is 20+ years old, did you not change during those 2 decades?
22 years ago was then.
