I've got one of these coming to hopefully cure the swarms of angels invading my night photos wide open. (see-

I just took the optical unit out of my 1957 model and it looks just the same as the one in the auction, except for the iris ring being black on the 'new' one.
Comes to 40 dollars shipped..

I don't think you're supposed to swap modules and mounts like that...they are supposed to be a matched set. Further, this module is an '82...it may have a cemented, non-adjustable rear group, so if you needed to adjust focus to match the mount you have, you can't. The '83 I just got rid of was such. My '57 is fully adjustable.
Here's what Kim Coxon says:
Steve,
It will not be of much help but I have a similar late black J3 on the shelf. It looks superb. The focus action is slightly stiff but totally smooth and the glass is pristine. It too has a focus issue. With the earlier J3's including some of the black ones, it is possible to collimate the lens not to back focus. It generally involves moving the rear group forward and then thinning the main shims. With the very late models, (mine is an '87,) The rear group is cemented and cannot be shifted without major surgery on the lens. I don't know when the change occured but it would now appear it is before '83. Some time ago, I managed to get a couple of new, late J3s. Both of these are now in the hands of other RFF members and focussed perfectly throughout the range. Having spoken to Brian extensively on the subject a couple of years ago when he was doing the J3s, all the ones he worked on were earlier silver ones and these can be adjusted.

Alas, I may have just aquired an overbuilt slide loupe in that case!
I've got my expectations well managed, I noticed the factory symbol on the 'new' unit is not the same as the one on my old one, that can't be good!
I'm sure after building the lenses so long just the same that they finally got rid of the need to have the rear adjustable... and these are perfect..
I mean if they could put a man on the moon.. oh wait..

Those late j3's sure are pretty though! Who knows, maybe you will have matched up two soulmates into a very happy marriage.
Not much stranger than snow dove bokeh.
