I just a great little tread in the R-D1 forum on serial numbers. I found it fascinating to read too.
So I was wandering about the Bessa R2, and how many were made. (the last mechanical shutter model that works without a battery, but the First "M" mount).
I have a black Bessa R2 SN xxx2909.
Does this put it in the first year of production ?
And many were made for the total Production of the Bessa R2
Does the SN tell use that is a Black or Chrome version ?
What is your number ??
Did you buy it new ?

I think 10K were made and there was only one year of production (they were produced in batches)? I bought mine used about 3 years ago in Taiwan, a grey import from Japan.
Mine is olive, of which 2000 of the 10,000 were produced. My serial is 1492, no "xxx"-es or anything.
They didn't make any silver R2 bodies.

Black R2 bought used here: sn 0003013
BTW, my NIkon FG's bottom case fits the R2 perfectly.

The "x" stands for leading "0"s, short hand, I guess.

Uh, not yet but I'll try. It looks and works great with the 21 lens, finder, and trigger winder. I'll try to get something to show.

Bought mine last year.
Bought mine last year.
Black color R2, grey import, location=Hong Kong.
Serial Number: 0004851
Lovely camera, giving me great photos.
Not any worse than the Contax G2, & 28/2.8, 45/F2 lenses.
Now I have 28/1.9, 40/1.4, and 90/3.5
I think the 40/1.4 is the absolute must have or lens to start off with.
Cheers,
Manfred

Bought my Olive one last year in Hong Kong with serial no. 2187. According to the Cosina Japanese Homepage, the R2 commenced its production in April 2002 until present.

I suspect the R2-S was camera number 25, not 1,025. Sales have been very flat, so CV may have altered the numbering system, or used the same serial numbers as the Leica-mount bodies.

Yes, I have fighting with myself about getting the 50/1.5, or the 40/1.4. Since I have a CV25 as my 1st lens, the 40/1.4 would a good chose -- almost a 50. but not quite a 35. I know my frames are 35/50/75/90, But the they are 87% FOV, so it should be close enough.. Then the 90/3.5 APO to round out the kit.
Now, Where did I put that dang winning scratch Off lottery ticket??
