So, got to run a roll through the Z1 in some nice winter weather yesterday. 36 exposures in sweet B&W. Alas, the sub-zero temperature caused the shutter to work a bit erratically during two exposures. No doubt old grease is to be blamed, because the camera worked just fine in warmer conditions afterwards.

This of course means I'll have to disassemble it and give it a good, thorough cleansing and lubing too. Might have to adjust the RF too, but that's another story. I searched the Net for specific Zorki 1 CLA guides, but found none. I dare not begin tearing it apart using manuals for other, albeit similar, cameras. Just to be on the safe side, you know. ;)

Would someone be so kind to give me thorough instructions what to do, and more importantly, what not to do. Wouldn't want to ruin it...

I managed to gather info on what kind of tools to use, but that gets you only so far. Maybe someone could make a full tutorial with photos from different stages etc. It would make a fine guide for us newbies to use.

Humbly I beg of thee, help the community! :D

Dear Posti Tuomo,
I suggest you to visit this website: it talks about Zorki 1

I am glad to see that you like FSU cameras: I am happy of my FED3B and Kiev4, they work perfectly and the results are very good.
And interesting to read that you are from Helsinki: I spent a wonderful holiday there, some years ago, and I still have friends there.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for helping out, Mauro! This is just the thing I needed. Now I just have to get the tools, petrol and some oil to get going. I'll record the operation with my trusty Olympus and post another thread once I'm done (not before the next paycheck though, gotta make some purchases). Actually, I'll be having a free week in February. A good way to spend that time, to see what the Zorki's guts be looking like.

I'll just settle for external cleaning in the meantime...

EDIT: Forgot to ask you about the trip to Helsinki! What was it like, what places did you visit etc? Pictures, stories, please share! :)

Happy to read that I could help you: I am sure you will enjoy your Zorki!
Well, I could talk a lot about my trip to Finland.
I was there during August 1984: I was travelling with an InterRail ticket, so I arrived in Turku from Stockolm via Viking Line, then I moved to Helsinki where I spent few days at the Youth hostel near the stadium. Then I moved to Lahti.
I was there to meet a nice girl from Helsinki, meanwhile I met many other friendly people there: I was 19 years old, it was an extraordinary experience, I still remember any detail of it!. I have a lot of pictures of those days (I owned a wonderful Fujica STX1, now gone), I may select the best, to be posted here.I would like to go back there, I still consider it a wonderful place!

I'm glad to hear you had a good time here! Looking forward to see some of your shots from that time. Helsinki, and the rest of Finland, is at its best in the summertime (those long and warm days are great, I'm a summer person I guess...)

If you ever come to visit Finland again, maybe we'll hook up and I get to show you around. Lots of different happenings and beautiful scenery to photograph, mind you! I have some pictures from last summer, lying around on my computer . Maybe I'll figure a way to post them on my website or on these forums (do they accept non-RF photography galleries here?) :)

Off to clean the Zorki body now...

Dear Posti Tuomo,
I am sure you can help me to visit Helsinki better: your proposal is really interesting, I do hope to have a chance some day, I would fill up my bag with slide films (maybe Fuji): But it is the same for you, should you have the opportunity for visiting Milano.
I would be glad to see your pictures, we may use our email address.
About Helsinki: I still remember the August 15 1984, I was in front of the Central Railway Station at 2 P.M. and we had 12° C degrees (it was a sunny day)!
Have a nice evening, and good luck with your CLA job.

Tuomo

You will need a deep tray to dismantle over to catch the parts that fall out... A 10 x 8 inch wet print AgBr is ok.

Shiny wood floor and magnet - for the screws, also desirable.

Noel

Thanks for the tips; hadn't even thought about getting a magnet but obviously that will come handy. A wooden floor, that I already have. :)

I'll concur with your views on Finland - I went for a few days (business trip) in 1994. It is a fantastic place. I still remember wandering around the Huereka (think that's the right spelling!) science park in Vantaa at 11pm and taking hand-held shots without flash! Beautiful country and friendly people...

Good to know you people have enjoyed our country, very pleased. :)

The name of the science center is Heureka, as in the famous exclamation made by Archimedes...

From Wikipedia: "He reportedly uttered the word when he suddenly understood that the volume of an irregular object could be calculated by finding the volume of water displaced when the object was submerged in water, subsequently leaping out of his bathtub and running through the streets ofhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse,_Italy Syracuse naked." :D
