Need a little advice on Zorki 4 CLA.

First and foremost, I have read wolves' excellent thread on the subject. But I need a little help on removing the winding knob, as it is a bit different from that of the 4K. Here's a picture for comparison between my 4 and the 4K.



As you see, the dial's top doesn't have the two screws as is the case with the 4K. I removed the small grub from its side, but that alone won't do the trick. What do I need to do to remove the whole knob? Is it threaded like on a Zorki 1 or...? If so, which way to twist? It won't move in either direction easily.

If there are any differences further down the road, I'd appreciate a heads up. 🙂

Hi - first post here for me - I'm busy disassembling my newly acquired Zorki 4. You just remove the retaining screw and then screw the winder off anti-clockwise. It worried me to do this as it didn't feel right but it was a cheapie and I'd nothing to lose. I've just checked the thread and it is definitely right handed. You will then see two screw heads under the winder that enable you to remove the top. Now just got to put it back together.

Thanks, that was the correct way to go. I was really anxious to apply some power, and it needed a powerful twist. Got it off, no probs. Off to the next stage. 🙂

😡 Grr, managed to break that little screw holding the rewind collar/button while screwing it back in. It was halfway in, and suddenly half of the notched head came off! Had to file the end a bit so that I could get the top plate back on... Now, the whole deal is back together and works fine as it is. But, next time I'll have to deal with that particular place it is going to cause some trouble. May have to drill the remnants out and use some kind of glue to get it seated properly afterwards... Damn I'm angry right now. ARGH.

Now it is time for rest.

PS Make that two broken screws: also the one on the flash sync dial failed. A great day turned horrible. 🙁

I mainly only use Kievs, to allow a spare camera for the bits that break.

If you can get the screw out you should be able to file it so that it can be reused, glus is ok until you need to dismantle again

Removin' that screw from the rewind collar can be done by carefully coaxing it out with some pliers. That screw inside the flash sync dial is a lost cause, alas. A small handheld drill must be used to remove it.

I managed to ease the winding action a bit by just applying some watch oil to the exposed gears, no disassembly needed there. Just removed the back.

It can be used to shoot film still just fine. It is a bit heavy to operate, that's all. But I definitely want to make this a user camera. I contacted Oleg on the matter and asked for a price estimation, no reply yet.

PS What caused Soviets to make these small screws out of brass? Too soft, far too easy to break.

Although brass is dissimilar and might corrode it is also self lubricating.

The steel screws are just as soft. the problem is the slot is way too large for the diameter so that even if the set screw head is buried in supporting threaded hole any torque will destroy, you need to think of them like hot butter. If you were putting them back it is your fault if you shatter on removal the FSU's, sorry.

Hey, it's not totally wrecked (yet)! 😀

On a more serious note, Oleg replied my inquiries about doing a CLA job on the Z4, he said it's gonna cost "48$ (or less)". So, it would seem convenient to send it to Mother Russia... Any info on his turn-around rate? A couple of weeks? Luckily, I won't have to send it from the other side of the world. Finally, something good comes out of being in Russia's neighborhood. 😉

Famous last words. I've bought 2 "parts cameras" ... once arrived, I think "Hey, this ain't that bad..." Both have been fixed and returned to service. 🙁 😱 🙁 So the pile get's bigger and still no "parts." 😎

Yup, you can say I was lucky. Semi. I guess it is better to ruin the screws while they are in their respective holes (or, even just halfway in!) rather than out of them...

Last time I sent Oleg a camera it only took 5 weeks total. If I remember correctly Oleg turned my Z4 around in less than a week and the rest of the time was shipping.

Ok, kmack. So the man works hard, sounds like a reputable gentleman. It is the Post that is sluggish, I should know. I work in the Finnish Post (hence my nick). 😉 I have no idea about the Russian Post, so no comments.

5 weeks, you say. I guess it takes more time to transport the stuff back to USA. 😕
