I have been using my r-d1 for about 3 weeks now. I love it.



When I first got it I checked out the rf alignment, it was spot on.​


This morning I was walking past my loccal camera repair place,


so I stopped in to take a look at what lenses he had... and to show him the r-d1​


"well your rf is off"​

What? Sure enough he was right slight vertical and horizontal.​

SO what do I do?​

1) send back to Epson​

2) have him work on it​

3) do it myself​

This is a brand new refurb, does epson fix them for free? How long does it take?​

The shop will do it for $60 and take two weeks. Ouch​

I have read the instructions; I think I could do it. I would like to be able to do it.​

Oh I mis cloud nine.​

I assume he focused on the crossed lines penned on the newspaper.

In that case, it looks fine to me.

Epson has a real spotty record when it comes to fixing re-furbs. Try doing a search.

The $60 sounds OK, but you *can* DIY if you feel handy enough. There is a thread with pictures showing how in this forum.
 
yes i focused on the cross. so i think close is fine. this was at f2 on my zeiss 35.

At infinity the way i can tell there is a problem is by looking at a street lamp down the street. when i look at something with more mass like a building, it is hard to tell. does that make sense?


I was looking for a ultra fast like 1.4 or 1.2, maybe i will see more problems then.
 
I would contact Epson Customer Relations Department first. See if you get any thing from them. The camera is under warranty for a year right?

On the other hand, since you have a non-s (right) then you might want to do the job yourself.

if you look for problems, you will surely see them.

If you're happy with the results in everyday use - leave it alone!

You had it for 3 weeks.
You were happy.
You did a test that you never would have done with film. BTW, test looks ok to me.
You did not like the rest result...


Do nothing.
Use it.

That is what I would do.

I don't think it is that far off - unless you do a lot of close-ups with very shallow DOF, you should be fine. I am pretty sure that even one stop down you won't even notice it. Obviously you were happy with the RF before this guy told you that it is off. The focus is off by so little that you actually might make it worse fiddling with it. If you can't live with it, just send it off to me, I'd be happy to take it off your hands😉
 
My refurb came with a rangefinder that needed lateral adjustment too. It's not uncommon at all. If it's not bugging you, leave it alone. If it bugs you as it did me, point your browser at http://www.richcutler.co.uk/r-d1/r-d1_01.htm. Rich Cutler has a very excellent collection of information on that page, including how to do a rangefinder adjustment. It's really very easy. Just be very careful that none of the four screws holding the accessory shoe falls into the body.

Good luck with it. The R-D1 is a great street camera.
 
yes indeed. I love the camera. I just took a bunch of critical focus shots, all came out fine.


New problem... my eye piece got stuck, and i ripped the rubber when loosing it. so i need a new one. :bang:
 
Man at camera store is probably PO'd at you for not buying the camera from him, so he wanted to ruin your day by telling you...Oh your RF is out of wack...But for $60 I'll fix it for you. And it worked. Now your miserable. Do yourself a big favor. Take others advice and leave it alone, fix the problem you messed up, ENJOY the RD-1, go shoot some wonderful picts, get back on cloud 9, and stay out of camera shop.😉

Despite all the little problems, it's an awesome camera. I amost broke down today and bough another one (had to go play with my Contax G2 set until the temptation passed, for now 🙂)
 
My refurb rangefinder patch is a bit skewed as well. It doesn't seem to affect my ability to focus, however, so I'm going to leave it alone for now. I have been using my 50/1.4 wide open without a problem (that is - a problem that could be blamed on the camera).

Now get back on that cloud and keep snapping!

Any eBay eyepiece for a Nikon FM, FE, FE2 is a perfect fit and you can get one for next to nothing.
