I remember reading somewhere that the lens on the Konica Hexar AF was a copy of a summicron. The Hexar has by far my favorite lens so I'm hoping to pick up a 35 summicron for my rd-1 to get a similar feel. Does anyone have a suggestion of which version would be the closest match?

here we go again

anyway I think that the over priced 4th version pre asph is probably what you are looking for.

There's a great link that I got from Pnet.. a guy did a comparison b/w the "king of bokeh" (what a DUMB name imho) overpriced IV version and the current ASPH version.

The neat thing was that the DOF seemed to "extend" (for the lack of a better word) on the IV version. So, at the same aperture, the DOF appeared deeper (or fall off was less drastic) on the IV version vs the ASPH version.

I'm searching (or going to buy) the ASPH version based on everything I've read. I initially was considering a Summilux but then I've read that the results after f1.4 are actually not as good as the Summicron.

My back-up for the SLR is a spare body and a short zoom. If I'm traveling with the RF I'll take a T4—more for the quick move to 35 than for anything else.

Daniel have you tried doing a search here or on PN? Just entering the keywords 35 summicron hexanon here produced 16 hits. Not necessarily all on-topic but I'm sure very good background material that would help you make an informed decision.

Thanks for the info, I'll try that search.. tried just 35 summicron and found lots of info but not what I wanted. As I continued searching though I just found that the Hexar came out in 1993 so the version 4 would make sense. I do more searching, thanks everyone.

Why not get a 35mm M-Hexanon? I would think that it would give you a similar feel. It would probably also be less expensive than a Summicron as well.

Yes I agree with the post before mine. If you want that Hexanon look go for another from the Hexar RF! I believe the build quality will be better than that of a Version 4 Summicron as well.

To answer your original question, I have the Hexar AF and the 35cron IV ... they have very very similar looks, and both are excellent lenses. fwiw, I sold my 35 cron asph after getting the IV. Not a knock against the asph (which is excellent as well), just loved the smaller size and signature of the IV. purely subjective ;)

good luck

From what I'm reading on various sites, the M-hexanon lenses for the Hexar RF are different from the Hexar AF's look. Seems like most point to the Cron v 4. That being said, after so much research there's a ton of great 35 lenses available!

If you look through my Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/wintoid/ , you'll find shots taken on the RD1S with the Hexanon 35mm and the Cron IV. In general I've tagged the Cron shots with "summicron" and the Hexanon shots with "Hexanon 35mm". I sold my Cron last week and am keeping the Hexanon.

I also have a Hexar AF which I love. I would say the Hexanon 35mm is quite close to the Hexar AF, but not identical by any means. The "bokeh" of the Cron IV is quite different to the Hexanon look.

If I had to sum it up I would say that the Hexar and the Hexanon look similar contrast-wise but they do have a different signature. The Hexanon and Cron are more similar to each other (apart from bokeh), and the Hexar is the most different.

Does that help, or is it just confusing?

Gonna have a crack at illustrating what I'm trying to say by showing 3 shots with blurred backgrounds with a reasonable amount of clutter in the background.

Hexar AF typical image, including bokeh (IMHO)

Hexanon 35mm typical image on RD1S, including bokeh (IMHO)

Summicron 35mm IV typical image on RD1S, including bokeh (IMHO)

Great examples, I guess no lens is going to be an exact match.

Maybe my best bet is to just find a 35 with a different look I like for the rd1 and shoot the Hexar AF when I want that Hexar look. ;)

Just to throw gas on the fire, I've been looking at the ZM 35/2

Next step is to buy one (or two :D ) and use them for a while to see what works for me.

Thanks!
