Where do I begin to get the exposure arrows to operate?
I purchased a used Electro 35 GSN on eBay and received a real clunker. This is my second GSN. I decided to keep it, clean it up, replace all seals and learn how to repair the GSN. I've got all my work on it finished and put a new battery in it. The test lamp lights, but the exposure arrows do not. The shutter actuates without a battery in both the AUTO and FLASH modes, as well as when the battery is installed. The focusing is smooth and accurate, the aperture collar detents nicely and the MODE ring rotates firmly. The lens appears clean internally and there are no scratches, mold or fungus. I took the top cap off and cleaned the viewfinder surfaces and the mirror. I use undiluted "Janitorial Strength" AMMONIA; it works like a charm on glass, plastic and metal. I have removed all grime from all external metal surfaces and now the camera looks like a million bucks.
If I could figure out how to fix the arrow lamp circuitry, I might end up with a real keeper! Incidentally, this camera has a six-digit serial number whereas my other one has a seven-digit S/N. Both S/Ns have an "H" prefix and were made in Hong Kong.
Finally, am I correct in believing that the shutter fires at 1/500 second in AUTO without a battery and 1/30 second in FLASH MODE without the battery?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Without the battery, the shutter should always fire at 1/500 of a second in any mode.
In the flash mode with the battery it should fire at 1/500 of a second.
In the flash mode with the battery it should fire at 1/500 of a second.

I'm having a similar problem as well. I have a GSN that everything works smoothly on, focusing, battery check, the exposure arrows, etc. The GT I just received has everything working except the exposure arrows.

I suppose it is possible the exposure lights are dead. It is also possible you have a pad of death problem as well.
I would think that with the top off, you should be able to put on meter on the wire to the lights. The pad of death is a little trickier, search the forum for advice on that.

Ha ha ha! Glad to see I am not the only one that got a clunker of eb@y. BTW, from the clunkers I got, half have stayed with me as parts/training units, too.
