Rock and Roll and photography

Linda McCartney took some great shots of musicians I enjoyed (still do), people like Hendrix, Dylan and Janis Joplin. So I will vote for her.

Her book "Linda's Pictures" circa early 70's has wonderful blue tinted shots of Hendrix on stage and a great image of the Yardbirds w/ their last guitarist, Jimmy Page.

Jim Marshall

Jim Marshall

And Jim shot it all with a Leica no one can touch him from concerts to abckstage to sessions Annie was great but concert shots?

Jim Marshall for sure. Nothing away from Annie but not in there backstage...and Jim's got those shots that are now a matter of record.

I don't like most of Annie's recent stuff (and don't get me started on that new book...) but her early work featured some good rock and roll work. Look at the pictures she shot of the Rolling Stones on tour. There are some shots where she's clearly on stage with them during concerts. Some good stuff there.

That said, I'd have to throw my vote in for Jim Marshall. Definately a lunatic, and his work rocked as hard as his subjects. The fact the he used a Leica has nothing to do with it, but it doesn't hurt either. ;)

MIck Rock....classic Bowie pics and Stooges too, also Andrew Kendall (currrent top shooter for NME)

I wasn't too wowed by Annie's recent book either. Well maybe "wow" but non-plused ;).....

I do recall seeing a cool picture in a magazine of Annie with none other than a Hexar AF around her neck.

Another vote for Anton Corbijn (my NME reading youth showing) although the only time I saw Joy Division I left after three numbers.

Yeah, Annie uses Hexar AF's sometimes, but she's more likely to use a Leica with a 35 Summicron, when shooting 35mm.

Doesn't mean her pictures are any good, though.
