Oh no...

I'm thinking of the unthinkable - selling my Contax II.

I don't really want to but that's why I'm asking this:

How much would a Contax I in working condition set me back??

Yea yea I've heard it all before "don't buy that camera!" etc.

So what do you think the difference will be between selling a perfect working Contax-II + sonnar 50/2 coll, versus buying a Contax-I + lens??

If your lens is good, keep it !! You can always service the next body, but fixing a lens is harder.

For your other thread, good luck with collecting the Beseler - I'm in the wrong country to help out. I used that sort of machine in my job for years. When you have it square you'll love it.

There are no working Contax 1s! That's why they made the Contax 2!

All the best, Ian :)

I'd be cautious in doing such a move, especially if you intend to own a Contax-I as a user, everyday camera. They look much more fragile than their youngest counterparts.

Typically a Contax II in fair shape working would be £80-120,
similar Contax I might run x3 -x4

The last one I saw in a dealers with lens was about £450 from memory, and it did not last long.

Ash, if you intend to get a working Contax 1, expect to pay about 600 to 800 USD (about 300 to 400 pounds).

The II that you have is a better user, IMO. A disclosure- the Contax II is may favorite film camera of all time. However, I have a pair of overhauled Contax I's that work beautifully. If you want a user Contax 1, I recommend that you look for the model 1f (the last version), referred to as the version 7 by Hans-Jurgen Kuc, as Zeiss Ikon had worked most of the bugs out of the camera by then, late 1935 through 1936. The version 7/1f that I have is very reliable.

£120?? Where have you seen them for sale? I paid double that!
(came with lens)

Mine still has the sticker on the baseplate it says £89, yes the lens was sandblasted, rather like yours, and it did not have synch. Shutter a bit iffy.

I have paid more, I believe they are called 'senior moments'.

From 'Peter Loy' london dealer. The prices vary a lot. The Contax I was also at PeterLoy's he said it was good cusmetically, I think it only lasted a few weeks.

If you sell yours slowly you then have to wait ages for a good one cheap, they dont appear very often, there is a big variation, see forum owners site, and expect to need maintenance, more frequently than your II, IIs are rugged little beasts like Kievs.

It's a moment of madness, I don't think I would sell the II.

One day I'll own a Contax I :D

About a dozen times I have been one click away from the Contax I - but with two working Contax II bodies, I think they might have had a reason to improve their line of cameras as quickly as they did @ ZI.

For the Europeans amongst us, Austria seems the right place to be... get more GAS @ (no connection to the sellers, of course)
