Questions about my M2

Hi guys, I just receive my M2 on friday. Its my 1st time im handling a leica. I notice the shutter doesnt seems to be quiet like what i have read in the forums. The shutter sound seems to be even louder than my yashica GSN. Is there a problem w my M2?

And for the self timer, its loose. Its moving up and down freely. Is there a quick n easy remedy for it?

Self times loose? It's because it's cocked. fire it using the little button next to the lever and your problem will be solved.

hey thanks! But do you mean just by pressing the little button? Or i have to press the shutter along with the button? Both doesnt work. :bang:
 
You'll feel a click when the self timer cocks. To release it push the little button that was revealed when you moved the self timer lever. If you press the shutter button it will override the self timer and release the shutter.

An M2 is a 50 YO ish camera. The shutter should be quiet, but far from silent. Well adjusted it should meet your needs in most every situation. That said, the important part is 50ish years old and well adjusted. If you are not sure if or when it was last serviced it may be a good investment to send her in for a CLA. It may cost as much as $250 or more depending on who you use, but that will be money invested in something that can last a lifetime.

yes. i think its has override the self timer thats y the little button doesnt work. Is there any solution for that?
 
the self timer needs to be repaired. there might be a repairman nearby that does leicas, but you can also mail it to a specialist.
 
Hi... I've been an M2 user for 35 years.

The shutter should sound like a fairly quiet "Phsst!'
But, do NOT expect it to be as quiet as leaf GSN.
With the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you
need a good CLA. I had CLA done after 15 years of
pro PJ use, and my M2 is thankfully reliable and efficient.

It is important to USE your gear. The grease on the focusing
ring of my Summaron 35/2.8 froze up, after months of non-use.
It was a little better than $50- to fix it, and well worth it.

Hey, Thanks guys. Most probably i will consider a CLA for my M2. Means more money! Im still saving up for a lense...
 
The m2 may be Youxin's favorite camera to work on. The self timer is probably not very broken, likely just needs to be cleaned and lubed as others have said. The self timer and slow speed escapement are good indicators of the need for service. Better them fail than the shutter!
I went to Youxin's house and watched him service my M3, and now it works wonderfully.
 
If, when you get a lens, you find that your speeds are accurate, you could tape down the self timer lever and forget about it. Otherwise, whole body surgical attention.
 
Sounds like she needs a CLA. The camera probably hasn't been overhauled since it left the factory a few decades ago. Mine acted in a similar manner, when I bought it six years ago. I highly recommend using one of the established repair shops. They may be a little more expensive, but they will get it right the first time.

The speeds are accurate. I would probably get my lense and bring him out for some shooting first! And maybe a few months later i will send him for a CLA. 🙄 I dont really need the self timer.

Thanks for link! Yes, i would probably send the M2 for a CLA. But im saving up to get a lense first. 🙂 By the way, whats the price like for a normal CLA? Im living in singapore , it will take i think about a month for the CLA and shipping. 🙁

Just like you, I just received my M2. My first Leica. What a beauty! As far as the shutter noise goes, I did not compare it to my GSN, but I did a non-scientific comparison with the Canonet (also leaf shutter) and found the M2 to be as quiet or perhaps a little quieter (but I might be influenced by the extra $500). I also have a Bessa R3A and I can tell you that those two are worlds apart. Enjoy the camera.

What are you using for a light meter? I have a hand held meter, but I am wondering if it would be more convenient to get one of the Cosina Voigtlander shoe mount meters?

Michel, I have both a VC 2 and a handleld Gossen Pilot 2 meter. They are both very good general meters when used properly. The VC 2 is quite convenient, but like any reflective meter, you have to pay attention to exactly where it's pointed😉
 
Thank you Roger. What is the angle of view for the VC meter? The reflective attachment on my handheld Sekonic is 54 degrees which I think is about the same as a 40mm lens.
