ok since im off overseas (hopefully) to the states...i want to create a blog to keep my mates and family in the loop on what i am doing. However after trolling through the web i am now at a complete lose at where to start...can anyone help me?

Yup, blogger.com was the choice for me too. Easy as pie. 🙂

For a photo blog look into Expressions Photoblogging Service. You can add words to the photos too.

Blogger.com works for me too. Once I worked out how to insert photos properly, that is.

wordpress.com is a nice alternative. You can start with a shared service under worpress.com and set up your own domainname later with wordpress.

It takes some skill to do it on your own, especialy when you want to integrate menalto gallery and google maps and other goodies. But there are companies hosting preconfigured wordpress blogs.
