I can see it now - a new use with user name "m8ayer" posting in the M8 section of RFF...

"Help me! My m8 turns blacks to magentas!"

I'm just kidding - I've considered selling all my canon digital gear and buying an m8 more than once.
But really - thats ineresting to see - hes quite an interesting guy thats for sure. Puts on a good live show

See, the 35 Summicron is a stubby icky lens. His knuckle will be in the shot.
His knuckle and the person who took the shot will be in John's photo file! Who knows, maybe they'll appear in a coffee-table book like the one U2 put out recently! Or an album cover! :)

I think his assistant or stylist told him that a Leica Rangefinder is the hip or retro kind of camera that he should use...... uber cool. The cynical side of me thinks he's got no idea whatsoever on how to use the camera ie. "the knuckle shot", but on the other hand he may create new interest with younger photog's in rangefinder photography and Leica.

So thanks John, but for goodness sake get that knuckle out of the shot!

If you continue through his blog he mentions the M8 more often. He seems to really like it. It is conceivable *gasp* that he is genuinely interested in photography, and likes his camera. He also has a Noctilux (and his pictures show that quite clearly :) )

It's a pity no one showed him how to use the focus tab. Given the way he plays guitar I don't think handling an M8 is beyond his comprehension, and given his musicianship overall I wouldn't doubt he's serious about photography. Mayer isn't some pretty-boy idol manufactured and hyped by a media conglomerate, he's the real deal.

Your Leica is a wonderland...

This guy has always annoyed me, and I don't know why. I endured a video when I was on an airplane and like 99% of the concert crowd in his video is women, so maybe I'm not supposed to get it.

The coolest musician I ever saw with a camera was Tom Petty. At a concert he had a poloroid camera that he just pointed with an outstretched arm at women in the crowd and snapped pictures. All he said was "I'll be looking at you later tonite." I wonder if he gave the pics to a roady as way to get those women backstage.

At least his finger isn't over the rangefinder window, or the lens cap is still on.

Oh, I see; he's a singer. Thanks, Clearchannel, I have no clue who's who anymore since 1996.

I've got a picture of Keshia Knight Pulliam somewhere around here that might make you feel current. :D

I used to work at a NYC big camera shop, and John I helped John M. a couple of times. He may not have the best technique with that focus tab, but I can tell you he is a serious photo enthusiast, and he knows his stuff. He's been into photography since he was a kid. For whatever that's worth to you.

Exactly. He'll be around for the long term IMO. And yes, I think he bought the Leica because he does know something about photography, not because it's "a cool camera".

After all, 99% of the camera buying public probably think M8 is some sort of web shorthand for "mate", have no idea what a Wetzlar is -- or even care to! ;-) hehe
