Does your Significant Other "get" your art ?

My wife loves when I take a great photograph of family....but cant understand whats interesting about a street photograph or a photo of an old building, a "no parking" notice.... etc.... How 'bout you?

LOL! Mine too, exactly. She wants photos of her orchids, sunsets, and overly cliched picturesque images.

I'm very fortunate to have a significant other who not only 'gets it' but actually encourages it.. there are many times we've been driving down a road and she'll practically yell at me to stop the car and get out to photograph something

she also found it very amusing that I brought along my canonet on our very first date and was taking photos of strangers in the coffee shop, lounge and George Webb's restaurant that we ended up in for breakfast at 4am

she also finds it exciting when I tell her that I spontaneously sold a Leica to buy a Zeiss Ikon.. yep, she's a keeper

my wife actually has understood all of my art, I love her for that!
my wife understands why i take pictures of random people, we had a discussion over dinner about photojournalism and how pictures can make a impact on a person. and we discussed street photography and why i do it. Just this week we had the talk about drawing nudes and using stock photos of girls in my design work. She brought up the point of us having a new baby in the house we want our daughter to be exposed to art and to see people as beautiful but we want to expose it to her when she reaches a appropiate age.
so she asked me to put the nude drawing and nude design work on hold. I said sure its nice having a wife that shares in your art and tells you what she likes and dislikes... so no more girls in my design work... for now anyways....

My current images are of little interest for the most part- (the kids even less so- the eyes roll if I stop to shoot some clapboard wall with shadows on it) but some elicit a 'wow'. My previous project, with the 810 were more interesting to her- images of leaves and fern stems.

I've not a significant, but all my dad tells me is "wouldn't that building (of which is way across the lake, and then some) make a great picture?" and then expects me to go out and make the picture of a lifetime.
He seems to have an obsession with pictures of this nature, and is especially critical when I shoot in B&W, because "it doesn't capture all the details." :bang:

My wife gets it, she doesn't really understand it...but she gets it. She will often tell me I need to get out and shoot, she says she can tell if I haven't been out in a while because I get "cranky" (cranky is a kinder term for a$$hole 😉 ). A few years back I had an M6 and 35, 50, 90 'crons stolen from my truck, she said it was so bad she bought me an M3 for xmas that year just so she could put up with me.

My kids get it, they have grown up with a rangefinder, TLR, or Hassy in thier face since birth. The other day my youngest came up to me with a reading and comprehension book from his schoolwork. The book has short stories with question and answers after reading. My son says "Dad, this is you", the story stated..."Many people photographers stake out a busy city sidewalk and study faces in the crowd. Then they quickly leap up and take a picture without being observed, it's not an easy task".

It's funny how the people you are close to really know you, whether you know it or not.

On the reverse side I'm very much into her painting and give her great support. We discuss our art daily as a routine part of our lives. We share ideas and make suggestions together. We prop eachother up when we get rejection letters and celebrate when we get accepted in shows and galleries. We give each other the time and space to do what we want. If she wants to paint into the night then I call for pizza. If I want to take a road trip over night then it's OK with her. She also encourages me to buy any equipment I want and if I ask her if I should she says yes 100% of the time. What a great wife and a great life!

I'm very fortunate as well. My wife is extremely supportive, offers great criticism. She is an artisit in her own right - video and photography, and is an avid sketcher. She is finding her niche in the advertising world.
