Maybe I shouldn't have included other intellectually challenged people in my topic, so please forgive me. However, I certainly am and wonder if there are any online instructions which clearly and simply show someone how to: lighten a dark (underexposed) B&W image; and how to crop unwanted stuff out of the image? That's all I want to do. Anything else would be over my head.
Please help.

Just google "photoshop tutorial" and "photoshop help" and you will get more help than you can possibly use, it's like taking a sip from a fire hose!

Actually, what I do when I need some assistance on Photoshop and none of the local Photoshop jocks know, I google with some keywords as to what I need help on. I don't think there's any one site that I've ever seen that I would consider best.
These are mostly written by volunteers and hobbyists, and as you may know for everything that can be done in Photoshop, there are endless ways to do it. An example would be converting a color photo to B&W. Some will say just go greyscale and that's it, others have methods that are incredibly complex and there's endless discussion as to what is best.
