This one is for the dozen or so Hong Kong-based RFF members -

Where do you get your film processed, printed, put on disc for:
1. C41 process
2. Black and white
3. 120 film and other non 35mm formats

I currently use Dot-well Photo Workshop on Carnarvon Rd in TST who turn around black and white in about a week if you want scans / 2 days for developing and prints only.

120 film comes back in an hour from them.

My 35mm - with no special requirements - go to Fotomax - they're everywhere but their scanning sucks.

What are your favoured places?

thanks

Fotomax is the last place here in Hong Kong.
Their staff is hired. They work for the hour.
They don't care.

There's a store in TST, excellent guy,
he owns the place, and deserves alll your business.

He will develop my film within twenty minutes.
They are spotlessly clean, no smudges, no fingerprint.

I found him in the back-alley mall,
If you know where Shogun Camera, that's opposite to it.
He is rather moody sometimes.
Because he is upset, he has not converted his equipment to digital yet.
He was an award winning photography back in the 1970s or 1960s?
He cares about his cameras.

And he knows about camera equipment as well.
You will have chatting with him.
Try that with Fotomax, I want to punch the guy.
He will never do your film within 20mins.
Knows almost nothing about color cast.
No young lady is no knowledge about photography
working for $20 hourly wage is touching my film.
Call me sexist. I say with sweaty hands handling my negative.

Back to the good guy,
No, I am not affiliated with him in anyway.
In fact, he sometimes talk too much, but that's because he is passionate about it.

I don't know if he would do 120 or not.
But I bet he does.

I will get his storename for you.

On the Island,
I goto Stanley Street . . . they are quite there as well.
Again I don't remember the name!

I just know where it is.

I will get you the name and the address.

These stores deserves our business.
Because they care about the work they do.
Not like some chain store which places a lot of ad but they suck at what they do.

In this dying trade, the best store deserves our money.
(Dying - a rather drastic word, but good old timers are retiring to new and profiting making guys.)

Hi Pizzahut - that's a great start. I know what you mean about fotomax. Alright for happy snappies but I guess not even you would go there for that.

I know where Shogun is - it's a great place for drooling over vintage cameras - even though I think they are overpriced.

I agree that we should support the smaller traders in this world who provide great service.

By back alley - do you mean the chemist opposite in the same arcade / the one next to kebab shop or do you mean the back alley by the Macau restaurant. Can't wait to find out now!

Thanks for taking the time to share... look forward to hearing more.

PM me if you are interested in catching up in HK.

I have 2 usual places to go, for 35mm film, a very 'local' shop in Yuen Long, 6 mega-pixel scans, reason : cheap and with acceptable results. For any other special needs such as 110, 6X6 and home made Xpan format ( a modified Zeiss Ikon 6X6 ), I have a very good friend he runs a photo-finishing shop in Tuen Mun. A 12' X 18" print is only HK$20, of course a friend's offer.

BTW, I suppose we are still waiting for Mr. Ho, for the very first HK RFF member gathering, if there is one.

Yuen Long a bit out of the way for me but I could stretch to Tuen Mun on the red MTR line! .

BTW, tell us more about yopur home made X-PAN format -- sounds intriguing - though I may not try that yet....

As for Mr Ho -- busy busy - he emailed me about a venue and I emailed him last week but haven't heard back yet.;)

getting the right processing and printing from negatives can be frustrating, to me at least, as it add a number of variables to the equation.

i have tried requesting zero adjustments on prints but somehow the results deviate from my expectations, sometimes. i was recently recommended to go mr. lee at shop 805 of the metropolis mall. under specific explanation, he usually does a fine job.

the yuen long place sounds interesting and would like to check it out some time. i have been told that there are a few old school photo studios in that district, would anyone know of them?

is mr. ho going to set us up?

he

The most famous old school photo studio is "One Dollar Photo Studio", about 40 years of history.

There is always an idea in my mind, that is to capture those old shops and stores which still in business here in Yuen Long (Hong Kong), of course with RF cameras, anybody here in HK interested ?

I found this about Hong Kong, I do not know if this helps.

Is the ChungKing Mansion house still there on Nathan Road?

Cheers

Very good ! May be we can have our very first HKRFF gathering very soon, and with an interesting theme "Old Stores" or something.

OK, hong Kong member, please show up now !

hi Dingo - just saw your equipment list - Kievs and Feds - cool - just got a couple off the bay... but I find the viewfinders a little dim and hard to align the images - do you have the same issues? Am just wondering as an FSU newbie. cheers.

Dryice and Louis,

It seems we can start arranging our very first meeting, but I think we have to start a new thread for this, lets go !

I also process my film for C41 in the back alley mall as mentioned by Pizzahut88. I shall have more details once I get back the biz card from my office. The boss there is named "Chung Gor".

I could really use some advice on where to go for 35mm development (C41, E6, and BW) on the island. Fotomax and Kodak are consistent, but bland, and the Tin Cheung downstairs is slow. I tried Color Six once - quality is fine, but some of the scans had an unearthly halo around the subjects that weren't on the slides.

pizzahut88, looking forwards to hearing from you.

That shop is called Fantastic Photography & Investment Co. (i.e. Ching Choi in Cantonese). The address is next to Super Star Sea Food Restaurant (i.e. Hung Sing in Cantonese)in the Tsim Sha Tsui Mansion, 83 - 97 Nathan Rd. The tel no. is 2375 5608.

hey guys, sorry to bump an old thread but does anyone know how much i could expect to pay to get a roll of 120 film processed and printed in hk? i was recently in hk and bought a holga only to find out that processing and printing 120 film in australia is REALLY expensive (HKD$167 a roll), i'm wondering if i should bite the bullet and process it here or wait until the end of the year when i return (i've got 30 rolls to do)
