I am considering a Canon P and lens to accompany my existing Contax G. I am not sure of the average price of a clean and decent model with lens. Can anyone suggest the best configuration and average price for one?

400 to 475 US dollars for a P and a Canon 50/1.8 lens, all in good nick.

With bit of looking & patience, a good 28 or 35 can be easily found in the $200 range. Both of my Canon wides were under $200, though the one was due to a big hunk of luck

yes, there is several Canon/Serenar 35mm's: an early f3.5 and a f3.2, a later f2.8, a fast f1.8 and an expensive superspeed f1.5 and a late and costly superb f2.
in 28mm there is an f3.5 and a later f2.8
the new modern CV LTM lenses are certainly not to be forgotten, as is the classic Leitz glass and the fantastic 1950s LTM gems by Nikkor.
these and the FSU lenses will fit the Canon P.

I have today seen a Canon P in nice condition with 50mm lens for £250 (€366 / US$500) in a local shop. The shutter works well but has some small 'pimples' upon it in one place. Is this normal/fixable/etc.?
is this a good price for this or perhaps a little too high?

Small indententations in the shutter curtains, while detracting from an otherwise "mint" camera, are normal, do not cause problems, and don't need to be fixed.
Normally you'll see any of three types of marks on a Canon metal shutter curtain:
-- Vertical rub mark running the height of the curtain, about 1/3 of the way in: friction mark caused by the metal band that crimps the end of the curtain.
-- Crescent-shaped dents in various locations: Often caused by finger pokes etc.
-- Small circular indentations (your "pimples" sound like these): Probably caused by pointing the camera directly at the sun; the lens concentrate's the sun's image enough to heat up the curtain. In a cloth-curtain camera such as a Leica M, this would burn a hole in the curtain and require a replacement; on a Canon, no need to worry about it as long as the shutter is light-tight and works smoothly.

if the body and lens are in good shape, and you get a warranty, if you are buying from a photo store, then the price is fair.
prices in the UK are a bit higher than in North America in most cases.
