packing lenses in suitcase?

So I'm heading off on my wedding/honeymoon (vegas and then Paris) tomorrow and packing my camera kits is an issue. I'm taking my 30D,17-55 IS and 24 1.4L, but I'm also taking my R2A, ultron, 15mm, J3, 85mm and maybe my 35 summaron. I'm planning on carrying on the canon stuff and the R2A body, but thought about packing the lenses in my suitcase? Bad idea? My carryon is already burgeoning (it's a giant messenger bag with my camera bag stuffed in that). Thoughts? Am I crazy for taking so much stuff??? Will the lenses be ok if well packed in the suitcase?

Don't put lenses in the suitcase. Even if they make it through they
get banged around heavily.

Wedding/Honeymoon is good idea; lugging all those cameras is bad idea.

Putting lenses in suitcase is very bad idea --they may survive but in the hands of some inspector...

You're on your honeymoon; concentrate on that.

Take one camera and one lens and take it with you in your carry-on luggage...

[If you insist on all that camera stuff, your intended other half will think you love your cameras more than her -- and you will be reminded forever and forever...

All you want is a few pictures of both of you in front of the tourist sites so you can show them around when you get back...

Hehe, thanks. Yeah, it might be a bit much for a honeymoon, but we both love photography. She uses the 30D on these things as much as I do, but i usually go for more than just the usual tourist shots. We went to Berlin in march and I hardly shot any film (yet those are my favorite pics), so I vowed to take more film this time around. Perhaps I'll leave the 24 1.4L home and stuff whatever I can in the bag in its place.

If I had an M8, this wouldn't be an issue 🙂

Carry what you need and can't easily replace...on my last trip my checked-in luggage was delayed both ways...4 days on the outbound journey. I could buy some clothes to tide me over, but new camera and lenses?

Both of you love to shoot. Then divide the load over both of you. You bring the Bessa, she brings the 30d (or the other way around). That way you bring all the gear you want without overburdening yourself.

If you can't divide the load, you have to decide which gear is essential and which is fluff. Leave the fluff at home.

Oh, and don't put any of your gear in your suitcase. It will survive the trip when well-wrapped (bottles do too) but they might get stolen from your suitcase. And the airlines take 0 (zero, none, nada) responsibility!

Ha! That'd be the day...she needs a sherpa for her shoes. 🙂 - oh wait, that's me.

But I solved the crisis. I took the 24 1.4L out of the bag and in its place stacked my 4 RF lenses. I love the small size of rangefinders. Slight aside, I went shooting with a friend who only has a Nikon d200 and longer zooms. His jaw dropped when I showed up with an R2A and a 35mm summaron. He asked if the lens was real, he at first thought it was a fancy cap. 😀

I'm off! Vegas baby, and then to Paris.

That's it, exactly. I can pack Martini glasses to survive any country's postal system handling standards if need be, but I leave nothing expensive or theft-worthy in checked luggage. Simply put, the customs inspectors and baggage handlers of the world are as human as the rest of us.

Given the choice, I'll bring less of it and carry it on my person or in hand luggage.
