Mack Warranty for M8?

I have a Mack warranty on my pro video camera but have never used it and am unsure as to whether or not it's a waste of money.

I've heard good and bad things about Mack, but am wondering if any Leica owners have any experience with them on their Leica gear?

Also WHY ON EARTH isn't Leica offering an extended warranty for the M8???

I've been thinking the same thing.

I bought mine at adorama and they tried to push it on me. I denied. I asked if I had a 30day period and he said it had to be purchased that day. I checked the Mack website and it says the warranty if valid if registered within 30days of date on receipt.

I found it for $150 at 17photo.com A local shop since I live in NYC.

I had a warranty for my Elan 7n and never used it. Though it never broke.

Send me the money I can do as good a job as XXXX..... They will tell you there is water damage and it's not covered.... SAVE YOUR MONEY I will tell you that up front. 🙂 🙂 🙂

In general these things make more margin for a retailer than the goods themselves. And full disclosure: I bought one from Mack for my R-D1. At the time, I had never spent that king of money on an electronic camera and I thought, well, what's the chance that the camera is going to go belly-up during the manufacturer's warranty period? And after I purchased the warranty I started thinking, "what are they going to do at Mack if something fundamental breaks on this camera?" If Epson doesn't support the camera and/or isn't producing parts, or if some specialty chip goes "kablooey", what the heck is Mack going to do? Well, same question on the M8. Parts are basically sourced from one place, programmers who understand the code are all in one place. What magic can Mack wield in that situation? I get the business model when the camera is a Nikon FM2 and there are a quadrillion of them out there, but less so when talking about an R-D1 (who knows, approx. 8K units?) or the M8 (any guesses, 5K units/). Can anyone else explain it?

Yeah guys I hear you. I bought Nikon's extended warranty for my D200 which is great because it is now 15 months old.

As for relative numbers of R-D1s and M8s out there my R-D1 is number 00473x and my M8 is 310684x.

So my M8 is in the high 6-thousands and the Epson in the high 4-thousands and I haven't heard of any Epson s/n at 5000 or above.

My M8 has a mid 9000 serial number, so I am guessing they are easily over 10k units sold to date.

I purchased (and completely forgot I did) a Mack on my Konica Minolta (now Sony) 7D in Feb. 06. Approximately 1 month after the KM (1 year) warranty ran out, the shutter jammed up. Today, after spending the last few months trying to locate someone to service this orphaned product, I finally got around to taking it to a Sony store. They told me to find the receipt and send it in to their repair service. I came home and found the receipt, and with it, the Mack 5 Year Warranty card! Now, I am not expecting quick turn around, as a high-end Contax SLR--I know, really bad luck choosing SLR manufacturers-- I had covered under a Mack, needed repair a few years ago and they took 2 months to fix & return it.

I am happy I got it in this case.

I sent my Nikon D1 to Mack a few weeks ago under warranty due to weird low light banding. Guess what? They sent it to Nikon, where it's now in line for sensor replacement!

In most of cases Mack send cameras to manufacturers.

I got Contax ND from Adorama, and put Mack Warranty.

Mack sent my camera to ToCaD America and they sent to Japan to fix it.

It's expensive to fix Contax ND oversea and Mack warranty was a good choice.
