Has anyone fitted an adapter/ filter holder/ lens hood on the inside thread of the aperture ring (i.d. about 22.5mm)so as to make it more convenient to set the aperture of the lens, an arrangement somewhat similar to a J12 where the 40.5mm filter holder can be used to set the aperture?
Many thanks.

Yes, on the outside not on the inner thread. I use a regular 39mm filter fitted to a Leica SOOGZ 36/39mm filter adapter, then inside that I have a Leica VOOLA ring that allows you to set the aperture without taking the filter off. I'm attaching a picture below that shows the pieces/parts and then shows them assembled on an Elmar. I have used this arrangement on my FED I-22 as well. Warning: the VOOLA ring costs a multiple of the price of an I-22.

Peter's solution won't likely work with the I-22, since this lens uses a ring instead of a lever as in the Elmar 50mm or even the FED-50 (I-10) lens. The "I-22" mentioned in the previous post is actually an Industar-10, lens which came with FED-1 and some FED-2 cameras.

Scroll down for a while and you will see.

There are small filters which can be screwed in front of the lens, which allow you to set the aperture without taking away the filter. (they excist) I've also seen a small japanese filter like this fitted on a fed lens. But it might be hard to find them, or the ones found may not fit well.

Wow Jay you are absolutely right. I was sold an "I-22" years ago and today I find out it's an I-10 (nr. F280 on p. 108 of Princelle 2nd ed.). I can tell you this - it's a heck of a lens! 🙂

Many thanks for the replies and references.
Valkir1987's reference shows a yellow filter fitted on what may be an I-10, a lens of which I have no knowledge, though it looks like a more faithful copy of the Elmar.
Does any one know the exact size of the thread fitted on the inside of the aperture ring of an I-22?

With thanks again.

I believe it is 19mm, I have two filters for the 50mm Cintar of an Argus C3 that fit this lens and my Leitz Elmar. The filters do not fit the later lenses that either have the lens ring flush with the front.

Yes I can confirm that the thread on the old 5cm Elmar is 19mm. I acquired a set of Walz 19mm filters with a Konica 1 that I bought a while ago. They fit the Hexar on this camera. I discovered that they fit the Elmar quite by accident one evening when having a clean and tidy of my camera cupboard. A very fortunate discovery on my part. I will try them on the Industar 50 collapsible that I have but I suspect that would be just too lucky.

The 19mm filter do not fit my I-22's or I-50's, they seem to need something about 22mm to fit inside the aperture selection ring rather than on the lens mount infront of the lens ring.
