Why Apple Won't Support Leica M8 or Epson R-D1

I attended an Aperture workshop last week in Florida and Ed Kelly, an Apple rep, told me point blank when I asked when Aperture would support my digital rangefinder cameras (Leica M8 and Epson R-D1), "We won't, the market's too small."

I guess he forgot he works for the company that makes a mere 5% of the world's personal computers!

Anyway, there you have it! So if you want support for your digital RF, speak up using the Aperture feedback link in the program itself!

If they could only fix that speed thing.. they'd have a cracking program..


Oh.. and I guess support for the M8 and R-D1(s) cams would be a good idea too

You'd think Aperture would support Adobe DNG sooner or later. Pentax is using it too. Apple makes some weird decisions. They worked very closely with Panasonic to develop the MXF files for the P2 flash memory system in Panny's HD cameras, but the clip browser that comes with the cameras is Windows only!

I personally can't stand aperture - far too slow compared to Lightroom imho.

Wait until you get above about 10,000 images in Lightroom -- it pretty much becomes petrified. Just launching the program takes 3-5 minutes on my system. Working within one folder isn't too bad as long as it contains no more than 400-500 images, but if you need to work with multiple folders you're in for waiting 15-30 seconds every time you click the mouse.

I have over 2000 images in Aperture and am not experiencing any speed issues. It starts up fine and working with the images is fast and easy..

I have and use both Aperture and Lightroom and Lightroom is by far the slower of the two in my experience -- but i can open and process my M8 and R-D1 files in it!

I'd be happy if I could just see something other than a generic icon with my DNG files. The awful thing about it is that with OS 10.4.8 they existed but when I upgraded to 10.4.9 they went away. It seems like Apple deliberately removed them...

Joe, making 5% of the world's computers is no small market. Actually, it is a massive, huge, enormous multi-billion dollar market. Millions and millions of computers.

If Aperture is running slow it's time to consider buying a new computer.

Aperture has a lot of functionality and it was designed as a modern program to run on moderen computers. I have more than 5000 images and it runs just fine. Better to be slow on old or underpowered computers than to reduce the features and functionality.

Aperture on a Mac Pro vs Lightroom on the Mac Pro = Lightroom for me.

Between Aperture 1.5 and Lightroom 1.0 I prefer the images and workflow of Lightroom.

Again.. that's my opinion and others will have differ and YMMV.

Regarding the size of the library - that's why you can create different libraries in Lightroom.. it speeds up the entire process - I certainly wouldn't keep all my images in one library seeing as how I shoot weddings/events as well as personal stuff with my cams - ergo one library for weddings, one for events, one for personal and that can be broken down even further if need be.

You're either a great photographer, or you need to do some culling. (This from a film photographer.)

Too small a market, STUPID. When you have folks willing to pay $5K for a body, they will spend big bucks for a pimped Dual-Core Mac!!

i've seen apple on more than one occasion not support something but open it up to 3rd party developers.

since THAT has occurred (a fix for this issue, i know mine works) apple will undoubtedly include it in a later release.

for example widgets was "borrowed" from konfabulator. sherlock from someone else, tabbed browsing from mozilla... i'm sure there are others.

At least in my case, Lightroom is a dog. I'm very disappointed.

Aperture at the Apple store runs like crap on their MacBook Pros.. That slick interface is not worth that hassel.

I also went to a Leica M8 workshop last week in NYC and got the opposite answer from one of the Leica reps in attendance. He told me that Apple was indeed working on an M8 profile and would be completed 'sometime soon.'

He said the problem with the slow response from Apple regarding the M8 had to do with the fact they they were waiting for the IR filters- just like the rest of us! They weren't about to release a version without the IR correction- maybe Leica can learn something from Apple after all....

I went to the workshop also, but am a novice at digital so had trouble
taking in all the fine points. As I recall , some statement was made about the
IR filters not really being necessary anymore because of a feature that will be
available in the upgraded Lightroom that can fix the few affected shots relatively easily. Please let me know if I heard correctly.
