I received a GSN yesterday that I purchased on Ebay. Having paid $36.00, and checking the photos, I expected a halfway descent camera. When I opened the box and began inspecting what I got, I was AMAZED! This Yashica appears to have never been used, looks like it just walked out of the camera store today. INCREDIBLE!.................Thom

Lucky you! Cameras on Eb#y can be a gamble sometimes. It is good to hear about a win.

Next step, go buy some film, don't put it off. Then shoot some pictures. Try low light situations (these cameras love low light). Because the shutter is almost vibration free, you can shoot all sorts of things hand held...you will be surprised.

If the light is really low, use a tripod and a cable release. Put your ear beside the camera and listen to the wirring sound of the shutter so you know when the exposure has finished - the camera can take exposures up to 30 seconds!

Experiment and have fun!

when people in this thread refer to the camera being great for low-light situations, are you tlking about the GSN in particular?

i just won one on ebay today (a little bit pricey at £36, but it came with the extra lenses, tripod, flashgun, carry cases and all manuals). i am so excited. it's my first yashica!

edit: oops, meant to post this in another yashica thread. but there you go. so, are these quite good in low-light application?

well, my GSN arrived yesterday and i'm taking it out on a shoot tonight (at a gig, so it'll be in low light). it handles brilliantly so far and seems in great condition, but compared to my oly 35 RC, the viewfinder is quite dim and the focus patch is nowhere near as clear and crisp as the oly. is this normal for the GSN? or is this something i need to address in my specific camera?

Congrats

Congrats

I just got my GSN back from greyhoundman and its working great. This camera is so much fun. I like it as much as my Oly 35RC but they both serve their purposes well.

I looked through my 3 Oly RCs and sole GSN, the yellow diamond in the GSN appears more clearly to me than the squares of the Oly. I think it's coz the VF of the GSN darkens the scene to create more contrast. So yes, the VF is dimmer, but in my case it makes the RF brighter. I find the focus ring of the Oly smoother to use, though.

yes, the focus ring is much smoother on the oly and i find it quite hard to use on the yashica, but i'm sure it's down to getting accustomed to the camera a little bit more. it seemed to handle beautifully in low light and that's what i got it for...

I've never found such a deal on ebay... :-(
A year ago I've bought one immaculate GSN but it cost me 150 Euro...

Damn...

But I'm still in love w/ the photos that camera can take.

Regards,

Got one recently myself and have been astonished with not just the quality of the lens but the signature of the lens too.

I haven't tried it in really low light yet but want to so I can see what its like wide open!!
