One day every year the nearby town I used to live in held a "cleanout day".
That night sanitation would pick up anything put out at the curb;
there was no need to schedule a bulk pickup.
I would always drive around the wealthy areas early, before the trucks.
I got some really nice, like new stuff for free - bicycles, appliances, furniture.
Wish I still had a van or station wagon...

Sweet deal, Frank. I had some luck last weekend (it was raining today):
"Redheads" Joel Meyerowitz, 1st edition hardbound, 50 cents.

A few weekends ago I found a polaroid sx-70, in great condition, for 10 bucks. There were two, too. The guy was also selling a whole lot of 8mm and 16mm film cameras. But I didn't get any of them.
If it wasn't raining today (and if it wasn't rose parade day), I would have made the rounds. It's fun.

My brother-in-law went to a garage sale about 6 years ago and I wasted the entire day the following Saturday helping him move it 10 miles to his farm.

Could somebody please tell me where the hell these garage sales are? In my area all I see are "very Brady" lamps, beat up old furniture, somebody's old shoes, bad paintings of vases with flowers in them, picture frames, old rockin' chairs, computers from 1992, somebody's old glasses...

We obviously shop at the same sales. You forgot old games (Twister is a staple), broken tools, stuff folks are too lazy to put in the trash.

One does have to put in some time searching and going to several sales (5-10) on many Saturdays in order to eventually find something worthwhile. Like photography though, I enjoy the process as well as the end result. It is time spent together with my son who also enjoys "garage sailing". It is enjoyable to meet and chat with folks, and interesting to see other people's "stuff" from a sociological point of view.

One of the advantages I have is knowing a lady who makes her living buying from estate/yard sales and selling in her own shop. She will call me as soon as she spots something I may be interested in. She's even been known to hang onto a camera till I get there so nobody else can get it.

FrankS,
My kids HATE it when I stop at a garage sale...therefore I go by myself and save them the embarrassment...For me it's a Treasure Hunt Adventure...
