Unbelievable - no packing!!

I just got home from work and there is book on my doorstep from the UK amazon.com and it was sliding around in the package when I picked it up. Yes it's damaged and has to go back. Unbelievable.

Back in my computer service days I had a supervisor
who used to pack up $30,000+ pieces of equipment
by placing them directly against the bottom of the box,
then filling the rest of the void with styrofoam pellets.
Clearly he sorta got the concept, but had trouble with
the execution. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Bought a "fully functional" Spotmatic from a "Platinum' eBay seller lsat year who supposedly sells a lot of cameras. Camera was wrapped in a too large a box "packaged" in a sheet of newspaper. I couldn't believe how shoddy it was packed. When I carefully removed the paper, the rewind crank fell off the camera and rolled on the ground. That Y thingy that attached to the film cassette dislodged inside the camera, and there was no way to open the back because the rewind crank was also used to unlock the back, screws to the Y thing-y, that was rattling inside the camera.

I complained to the seller about how it was packed and blamed his packing for the condition of the camera. We "had words" via email but I got a refund. I made sure the camera was packed exactly how it was sent to me when I returned it. Same box, same sheet of newspaper, wrapped precisely the same careless way...

When it was received by the seller he complained about how I packed it, and said the camera would have been salvageable had I packed it better!

Must say though, that was the only bad experience I had...

I once shipped a Nikon 85 1.4 AF with no packing. I taped the address on the UV filter and so it went.
I was actually hoping the lens would get damaged or lost since I insured it for 3000$ but it got delivered safe...
I wasn't happy nor unhappy about it. I got a negative feedback for the trade but that's it. Life goes on.

Regardless of how much it's insured for, the carrier won't make good
on the claim if the item is in their judgement "inadequately packed".
This happened to me when a repairer shipped my camera via UPS.

Furthermore, regardless of how much you insure the item for,
they will only pay replacement cost.
And yes, they know how much things really cost.

Remind me not to buy from you! 😉

The cost of proper packaging, postage, insurance and delivery confirmation
pales in comparison to the cost of a deal gone bad, and camera repairs...

I just had this experience with Amazon too. Luckily the books and CDs weren't damaged but I thought it was a 'one off'. Amazon used to pack very well.
Looks like we have a 'no packaging' trend coming on. Is this a response to global warming?

Actually I have to say (and I just posted this in another thread) that I got a very nice and apologetic email from Amazon UK this morning promising an instant replacement and no need to send the 7 lb. book back. So they are making good with excellent service but the book was packed in a flimsy wrapper and was loose inside - Amazon US shrinkwraps all such books to a larger piece of cardboard and also places filler inside the box so that the contents can't move.

I guess I have been lucky too. The only bad packing job I got was an off ebay deal on an 8x10. Granted it was heavy. The ground glass was broke so I just sanded a peice of glass to replace it. Worse, unmentioned was the fact that there was a constellation of pin holes in the bellows. Liquid Plummer to the rescue.

I always did try to mention good packing as I consider that an important part of the deal.

Have had this happen with books and Amazon - broken bindings.

Got a lens from a large, well-known NYC vendor today that had airpacks - but only on 3 sides. Good thing the lens was in an old-style Nikon hard case with foam padding...but this lens will get careful scrutiny for image problems...
