Robert Plant in my town and Ilford Pan 400

Firstly, the rock legend Robert Plant is in my town and my head is already spinning of excitement!!!

I decided to bring my little Bessa with me, and J8 on her (because my only other lens is Ultron35 and I think that I'll need every mm!)

The main question is: I only have Ilford Pan 400 + Rodinal, and don't think that will do him justice?!? :bang:

Does anyone have suggestion how and how much can it be pushed, I did found times for 800iso (1+25/8min but this seams little harsh)? Maybe 1600 or even 3200, should I buy Microphen (is the difference obvious)?

I would hate to miss this opportunity!

I wouldn't recommend Rodinal for pushing, especially not to that kind of speed – you'll get grain like golf balls. I feel you'd be better off shooting the film at whatever speed you find you need, and picking up some XTOL or Microphen instead.

I regularly use it at 400ISO in Rodinal and love it.
But when I saw this extreme thread I thought that it shouldn't be so bad... to try... but on the other hand I wan't them to turn out right cause of occasion.

Microphen is the only developer I use for 400 and over. I don't know Ilford Pan400 (not available here?) but HP5 at 400 or 800 is beautiful in Microphen 1:1.

Microphen gives a cleanliness and splarkle to fast film that easily outweighs any additional cost or time in my work.

Different films react in different ways to Rodinal. You could try pushing this one with it, but I suggest doing it in a situation that's less important. 😉

D76, Microphen, XTOL, etc, would do you better in this situation. If you can get your hands on them you'd be better off. If you HAVE to use Rodinal, prepare for the grain to be massive.

Ilford recommends Microphen when pushing HP-5 to 3200.

I'd push to 1600 or 3200. If you are planning on taking pictures during a concert, you want every stop of shutter speed you can get. However, a fully lit stage isn't as dark as one would think, so you might only need 1600 for a live show.

I remember Robert Plant very well. In the late 80ies and early 90ies I used to work as stagehand at rock concerts in Zurich, and he was one of the rare gentlemen in that usually very rough business. One who knows the ups and downs of a showbusiness career, one who does not need to show you he's the star, and you're nobody. No, Robert was a distinguished and polite personality. (Which I can't say about his former Led Zep guitar player Jimmy Page who we had in town on another gig. That was a rather bigheaded dude...)

Hmm, about your emulsion question - better leave the camera in your pocket and enjoy the music 🙂

I shotted 3 rolls @1600... and hope to develop them tomorrow... now I'm done and going to beach... 😀

I've shotted 3 rools of 24... developed first in 1+50:Rodinal for 24min, film turned out too thin with blown highlights, so the other two where developed for 23min (agitation every 2min)... I'm thinking of shortening that to 22min next time... These square shoots are heavily cropped (to 60% or less), cause 50mm wasn't enough! 😀

Overall I'm satisfied... because the light was extremely difficult and fast...

You did well considering all the difficulties, not least a 50mm in the crowd!

Good stuff.

Led Zepp were the only decent heavy rock band IMHO, everything after them seemed a bit lightweight..again IMHO.
