I have recently purchased an Olympus 35 DC. Since camera is completely automatic, can't figure out how the flash guide system is suppose to work. Any ideas?

Hello izziebears, assuming you're new here (your first post), a welcome is in order.

Sorry, if this sounded harsh, please be sure that I don't mean it 🙂

... but from time to time I saw people asking about flash. I don't get it, why do you need flash with a 30 years old camera anyways?

Furthermore, the 35 DC has a 1.7 max aperture, with modern fast film, you can shoot indoors with ease now. And you'll like the result better than those using the flash (unless you're triggering an off-camera flash, but that's a different story).

Re: Flash on Oly

Yes, I rarely use flash, in fact I am shooting ASA 400 now. I also have an Oly 35 SP with the guide number system and was just curious how the DC worked with its built-in guide number system and completely automatic exposure system. I read the online manual but it is not clear other then setting the flash control button to Bulb or electronic. The DC will not go off if there is not enough light, flash or not which kind of defeats the purpose of a flash in low light situations.

Well, I guess then what you would want a flash for on a "modern" camera?
A flash still provides the same thing even after all these years, extra light.
I hope this doesn't sound harsch.

Cheers

I was referring to the hassle of using flash on a 30 yrs old camera, Guide Numbers are not as easy to understand or use as TTL on a "modern" camera.

And no, yours doesn't sound harsh, it sounds cynical. 😀

Somewhat late reply, just slide the flash in the hot shoe and set the guide number on the body, the camera then chooses the aperture.

But it only works with a flash in the hot shoe.
