Mandler Heaven: pictures of, and by, lenses designed by Walter Mandler

Beautiful eulogy with a box insert listing of his lens designs.
Oh that’s too funny. I was 7 or 8 when I met Dr Mandler. He asked me a simple maths question too. I answered it immediately (I was very good at mental maths then). He asked me another one. This went on. Eventually my father got tired of the “Marty as a biological calculator” game and took Dr Mandler to where the grown-ups were talking.

So he did this with many kids! 😂 He would have thought me a dunce, I couldn't do mental arithmetic as a kid for nuts. Your father seems well connected in the optical industry, host to Dr. Mandler, knowledgeable about Zeiss and Contax designs.

My father was an optical engineer, and was an expert initially on coatings, although more precisely on processes and mechanisms for applying coatings. He then developed expertise in qa/qc for optical production assembly. He did a lot of work for Zeiss and Leica. He was good friends with Günter Leitz, which is how, I expect, he met Walter Mandler. He worked in a university optical lab for over 30 years. He had a strong dislike for anything electronic, but while he could still see well and retained fine dexterity, he could fix anything mechanical. I have several Rolleiflexes he rebuilt from ruined cameras he was given, and he gave me part of his collection of other cameras.
