I saw her exhibition in a recent visit with family to the Whitney. We started from the top floor and spent a lot of time with Calder's mobiles so, unfortunately, by the time we reached her floor we were pestered by a bunch of starving minors (= our and our friends' children) and didn't manage to invest the time needed for a really close look. Her photographs are obviously way removed from standard photographic fare (no pj/docu/street stuff, for example) but I thought the work still echoed with references to the tradition of photography, with some reminding of colour photograms and some of Man Ray's experiments. I found the idea behind the work intellectually intriguing although, to be honest, the alternative process colour palette left me a bit cold. The jargon that came with the works was seemingly from a contemporary photography theory perspective. Take it for what it's worth but I thought it was unnecessary. Of course, at the time of having these thoughts I also had a kid wrapped around my leg, so that may just have been a gut reaction based on a very fleeting encounter and no more. To be sure, it's an interesting exhibition, all the more so as it creatively reflects this very young person's interests/concerns.
