In the interest of simplification , I am considering going to a single film and developer combo any thoughts on this? , right now I have tri-x plus-x and t-max in my bulk loaders, in the developer box I have rodinal and d-76 I am mixing up a batch of diafine today to process the plus-x @ 400 asa
thanks for your opinions, and thoughts,
Robert

The combinations and permutations of different films in different developers with different lenses in different lighting conditions are too numerous and overwhelming to make sense of. For the longest time I've stuck with HP5+ in Ilfosol S developer, but have recently switched for economic and control reasons to HC-110 with the same film. If I use a slower iso100 film, I use Rodinol.

There's nothing wrong with that. There's no better way to really know and familiarize yourself with a particular film than to shoot the heck out of and trying different things (pushing/pulling) while keeping a constant developer.

TMAX 400, Tri-X, and HP5+ are all pretty forgiving films.

My personal favorite combo is HP5+ and D-76/ID-11

HP5+ in DDX

HP5+ is my favorite b&w film now - I prefer it even to Delta, unless shooting for smooth tones for work...

Have fun.

The "getting familiar with" is exactly why I shoot Lucky SHD100 at iso100 and dev it in caffenol. Each and every time I brew the same coffee, use the same temps and timings. And each and every time I get predictable results, results that scan well too.

I played around with Era FP100, Efke KB100, Lucky SHD400 and a roll of Tri-X, all in caffenol. The only one that I would consider is the Tri-X but it's too expensive for me.

If DD-X wasn't so expensive I'd use it for everything. Nowadays I use 1+1 Xtol for everything, in my experience it works well with Tri-X at any speed, and also with Pan F, FP4+, HP5+, Acros, Neopan 400 and Neopan 1600.

1 - it is a _good_ idea to stick to one film and developer, work the heck out of it, and figure out what you like, dislike.

2 - then, knowing what you like and dislike, ask others (perhaps on RFF or PN or whatever), what you might try to get more of what you like and less of what yo don't.

in other words, I don't think it's wise, in the long run, to stick with just one film and developer for every single situation. ever. Now, you might use one combo for 99% of your work.

I think Plus-X and Rodinal is one of the best combos ever. I love the look I get with it. Shoot it through a high quality vintage 1960-70's lens and it just shines. Plus the Rodinal lasts forever after it's opened.

Rodinal! Tri-X!

But honestly, this is my standard (and has been for most of my B&W years). You can push to 3200 or 6400 and still come out with images of great quality (albeit with much grain), and when shooting at box speed the film is very forgiving of exposure errors.
And Rodinal is cheap :).

It's half the price :)

I used it stock to begin with, but can't tell very much difference at all with 1+1 and slightly longer dev time. Give it a try.

After I got out of school, where I experimented daily I used Plus-X and D76 for years. I then opened up and started running it in HC-110. Didn't really change that for a long time, benefit is knowing EXACTLY what you're going to get every time, drawback is the exact same thing.

I'm going to do one film, one developer in July. I've decided on FP4 and Diafine. I want to get the feel of this combination as I feel it's going to be one I continue using quite a bit. I've also found that they play rather nicely together.

One film... Ilford FP4+. It does the job. I'm also contemplating trying some Efke rolls too.
One developer... hmm. I was using LC29, but after a while it started giving results I wasn't after, so I swapped to Adox APH09 (reputedly the replacement for Calbe R09). This developer's giving the results in the negatives I was originally looking for.

So, for now, it's FP4+ and APH09.
