not my day for lenses!
man, i'm pissed off.
sherry k. sent me a lens that is cosmetically beat up. i can live with that. but the front element is all scratched up. and the filter threads are all screwed up, it wont take a filter or a hood.
the aperture ring is loose and rattles.
she rated this a 7.
good points are the focus is like butter, it's tiny and weighs nothing.
but i've had better luck on ebay...

Joe, I hope you can return it. How anyone can call that lens a 7 after you've described it's faults, I don't know. Sounds more like a 4 to me. Good luck.

it's amazing how tiny this lens is. i think it smaller than the cv 75/2.5 lens.

i sent an e-mail to sherry expressing my disappointment in the lens.
i'm guessing the marks on the front glass won't be too noticeable in any pics, and from her website photo i was expecting a poor cosmetic condition but i'd like to be able to put a hood on the front.
anyone have a clamp on hood that would fit ?
the 42mm push on plastic cap fits.

sherry has a full return policy, less shipping.
so between 24 bucks for shipping and another 17 to canada post for 'handling fees', that's almost half of what i paid for the lens. and then there is the shipping cost for the return.
hardly seems worth it. i guess if i can't find a clamp on hood i could use it for overcast days only. gezz, talk about specialized lens use.

Joe, I bought a tool from Micro-Tools that is designed to remove filter ring dents and it works quite well. I've "saved" several lens that now accept filters. I look for dented lens now because a lot of people won't bid on them.

Walker,
I have been looking for a way to repair such dents. Thanks for posting the link on the vise. Do you have any detailed directions on how to use it (or links to such)?

Unless it's a very small dent, it's best to do the repair in small increments. I usually begin on one side of the dent and remove only part of it. Then move to the other side and do the same, alternating and slowly moving to the center. Be careful not to over-expand and you'll do fine. The tool can also be used to "chase" (clean up) the threads if someone has battered them or tried to use pliers and marked the threads.

hey walker,
the threads are not dented. they seem, soft.
the filter/hood does not catch on all the threads just some. so the filtr/hood starts to go on but cannot finish.
it needs to be re-threaded. i think there might be a tool for that, seems i have heard of one but cannot remember where or when.
ya know, even with a good return policy, i'm surprised someone of the stature of sherry k. would even bother selling a lens such as this. i realize it's not a leica lens but...seems silly. i doubt i'll buy from her again or at the very list i'll send off a full questionaire first.

Hi Joe,
It almost sounds as if someone has spread those threads before or they may not be the exact size that you think they are. I would GUESS they're 40.5mm but that's purely spectulation.
The tool I linked to will act as a thread "chaser" if you turn it out to where it makes contact but can be turned. I've used it that way a couple of times with success.
Perhaps a note to Sherry explaining why you're disappointed and how she can improve her "grading" system might help. A few dollars today are quickly offset by customers who don't come back..... not to mention the time and cost of returns, etc.

walker,
i tried something a bit different.
i put the hood on a filter first and then tried to screw the combo onto the lens. after about 5 minutes of frustration the filter caught on evenly.
it's on there now and i doubt it's coming off.
luckily the filter is a good one and the hood was the only extra i had in that size.
oh, btw, it's a 34mm size. they are somewhat popular on the older canon lenses. this was my hope for finding a push on 36mm hood.
thanks for the support, feels good when things go dark.

Man I'm sorry to hear that
From all I read, I didn't expect to have such a problematic lens coming from SK without at least mentioning those faults.
Hope that at least you can overcome those problems and put the lens to some good use.
