how many of you use/keep a second body...either as a regular user or just for a back up?

i wonder how many of us just have one body and what happens if it craps out?

um, not me.

Well, okay, things like "I have one 203FE, but if it craps out, I use my 501cm, except I can't use any of the F lenses".

Doesn't quite count, does it?

I have too many, but normally just walk around with one. M6.... OM1..... SRT.... EM5.

They all back up each other.

I usually carry two bodies, especially when travelling. On my last vacation to Europe I carried a pair of M3's, one loaded with color, and the other with black-and-white.

Recently, I carry an S3 and an SP. The S3 has 35mm lines in the finder, so it is a good choice for the 35/1.8 Nikkor lens. I prefer shooting with a 50, and the SP has an uncluttered finder when the 50mm framlines are selected.

For medium format, a pair of Rolleiflexes are not so heavy, one carries color, the other b&w.

Today I am carrying an unlikely pair, an M4 and a Hasselblad 500cm.

Oh, I only have one M9. If it craps out, my digi-backup is a Pana GF1, but I really don't like its output. I use it for digi snaps and ebay, but as far as love and respect for digital files, the M9 is head and shoulders above. Maybe because I haven't learned to shoot RAW with the GF1, but the jpg output is sad.

If my M9 could only auto-focus with all my M lenses, I'd be in heaven.

I have more than one camera, but they are not backups, just more cameras. I don't see the need for a backup unless you're either a pro or travelling somewhere you won't be able to buy another. If you're just shooting around your home town and the camera breaks, you've lost the time it takes to go out and buy another one.

There are exceptions of course, like really rare stuff which might be hard to get parts for, but most of us use fairly common cameras. My most unusual is a Horseman Convertible, which although odd, not exactly gold dust.

I often carry pairs of cameras:

- M4 + 35/2 UC-Hex / Hexar AF (one for colour, another for B/W, or different speeds)
- 2x Rolleiflexes, a MX-EVS and a 2.8F, similar use as above
- 2x F mount bodies, F3 + FM2n, same as above
- One 35mm body and one MF body
- For digital, an SLR for tele work and my X-Pro 1 for 28/50mm work

I have two Leica M6 bodies, one a .72 and one a .85 finder. I also have two Olympus OM-4T bodies. I want a second Mamiya 6 but can't afford it now. Over the years, having a backup has saved me a few times when out shooting.

I often carry 2 Fujica 690 cameras.

One with a 100/3.5AE, and the other with a 65/5.6 + a 50/5.6 in the bag.

Most likely I'd carry 2 or 3 cameras that do different things - panoramic, portrait, video, etc.

Also tend to carry all tripod cameras or small and mobile.

Mobiles usually From - XPan + OMTi-4 + Widelux + OMD + Canon T90 + NikonF4/5 or Canon EOS3.

Tripod group - Fujica 670/690 + Linhof 617 + Noblex 150.

No backup here. I'm not a pro. I have two bodies (xpro1 and a Canonet). I never carry both at the same time. I do not want to deal with more than one camera, especially when using mainly an interchangeable lens camera.

I have six Minolta SRT's. And two SR-M's. And one XK.
And three Plaubel Makiflexes.
And four Hasselblads.
And four Sinar Normas.
And two Sony Nex 3's.

Around town, just the X100s. On assignment, ALWAYS two bodies- XE1s. Sometimes I take the X-Pro 1 as well. I travel to remote areas to photograph- most recently the sea ice near Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, to photograph Inuit hunters. Can't get a new body flown in there. I like the Fujis because they are small and light, have great optics and I'm sold on the x-trans sensor. They are easy to keep under your parka, which keeps them warm enough to function. When you are that far from home, you leave nothing to chance.

When I am shooting street photography or just shooting for the heck of it locally, I will take one body (MP or M4-P) and 1-2 lenses (28mm and 50mm if taking two, 28mm if taking just one). Going on a photo workshop or photo trip, I will take both M bodies in case one craps out on me.

The M4-P was CLAed by Sherry Krauter about six months ago so it is more or less like a new body. It has become my primary M body with the MP being the backup.

If I am using my SLR kit, I will back up my Nikon F100 or F3 with an FM2n.

Better safe than sorry, yes?

Having 2 is a waste of time/money, unless you are Pro or have very specific needs imo. If the one you use fails, just go to the shop and buy a new better cheaper one. 2nd body digital is just an over invest and money trickling steadily away while it sits in your bag ...
