So I'm kind of wanting to cover the elections using the M9. But I'll admit the autofocus and simpler metering and quick movement of the day make me want to pull out the Canon 5D mk2.
So I'm waiting on one of the politicians to cast their vote at 6am. Should I use the M9 or the 5D.

Either would work well today - an SLR would not be out of place at the polls. You may have folks ask what agency or paper youre with. Voters would be more likely to view use of an M9 as "personal voting day shots".
A 24-70 would be nice for this, but the prime is excellent for opening the aperture and isolating your subject.
If you'll be there for a while, the M9 would be lighter.
Shooting the M9 you might meet someone that shoots rangefinders and have a nice conversation.
Go with what you feel most comfortable shooting. If the images are for your own use and satisfaction - shoot what gives you the most pleasure or accomplishes goals (such as practicing focus with the M9).
btw - I have both systems, but when I hit the polls later today it will be the M9, as that is carried every day..

So I did end up using a mixture of both. The M9 for the polls and some quick spot news.
And then the 5D for a Real Estate thing. Only because I needed the 20mm.

So while they didn't use any of the election pics that I took yesterday I did end up photographing a late night murder and got my very first byline.

I used the M9 for the photograph. I should have used the 5D because of the darkness. But sometimes I forget that while I love working with the M9, the 5D is technically superior.

It's a good point. It may not be allowed and I didn't ask permission, but I also did not do it discreetly, and tried to use some discretion. The man in the voting photo is my brother, and I took the shot when the woman who I didn't know was looking forward. With the woman reactivating my status I purposefully left her face outside the frame.
I thought there would be more trouble with the dogs casting ballots.

Nope. But I work for a newspaper and they apply for permission to the Board of Elections on my behalf and I have to carry a special letter as well as my press card to photograph at the polls. And everyone I photograph has to verbally consent to being photographed.
