I think it's time to start thinking about what we are going to do regarding prizes. As I said in the rules / call for entries post, this isn't particularly about winning prizes (or even winning), but some people have kindly offered some FSU equipment as competition prizes. We have a little while to work this out. The uploading period is about to end, and will be followed by a month of voting. It would be good to have the prizes sorted out in time for the end of the voting period. My thoughts are below. Any further suggestions and ideas are welcome - please post in this thread.

Things to work out...

Shipping
Firstly, we need to consider how the prizes are to be distributed. This is mainly about postage costs, and possibly import taxes. While domestic shipping is relatively cheap, international shipping can get somewhat expensive.

My inclination is this: The prize giver does not pay shipping unless they want to (whether or not they want to might depend on how much it costs). If the prize giver does not want to pay shipping, then there are two possible ways to handle it - the prize winner pays shipping, or, as has been suggested, some sort of PayPal fund is established where several people chip in to cover the costs. I don't mind which of these is done, but I will not have any involvement with organising a shipping fund.

If the prize giver doesn't want to pay shipping, my preference is to give the prize winner the option to pay shipping and, if they choose not to, let the next-highest-placed entrant have the choice, and so on. Alternatively, it could just fall back to the typical RFF giveaway, where first come is served first (or s/he who posts an appealing case for getting a bit of kit is awarded said kit).

What the prizes are awarded for
The other thing we need to do is work out what prizes are being offered, and how they get awarded. As you are aware, there are 5 categories in total, which means that there will be 5 winning entries at category level. (I am deliberately missing out tie-breaks, here!) There will also be an overall winner, or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc places regardless of category. There may also be other reasons for giving prizes, which aren't based on the number of votes that an image receives.

Before we can work out how prizes are awarded, we need to know what prizes are available. To that end, if you have something that you'd like to offer as a prize, please send me a PM or post here, describing what you are offering. Please also give an indication of what your limits are, if any, regarding shipping (winner pays, you will ship domestically, you will ship internationally, etc). If you have previously PM'd me about prizes, please send me, or post, a reminder (what you have to offer may have changed/gone since then).

I'll give this a week or two, and then post a definitive list of the prizes that are on offer, and we can then discuss how they get awarded. (For example, if there are a total of 3 prizes, we can't have 5 category winners - we'd have to do top 3 enties overall. If there are 6 prizes, we could do category prizes, and a grand prize for the overall winner. You get the idea.)
