Can anyone here share experience and or opinions about the earlier version of this lens (serial #s around 321xxxx-) and how the hood that attaches with pin works? I am guessing that it is not reversible for carrying with the cap on. I am familiar with the later version that attaches with two spring loaded tabs.

And my understanding is that optical design and coating remained unchanged through the production of the lens.

Thanks in advance,
David

I have this lens and the hood. It is not reversible. I am not sure if it is a clip on or push and let go and slide. I will check tonight when I get home. I do get some vignetting. I do not remember if wide open or at f8. I have gotten great photos with it on the M8. I have not used it much, but it is worth its price. I tried to capture wide landscapes, but its best use if to make a close object stand big with a large background. It is a bit too large for Leica, but I like it.

Thank you for that and I will look forward to what you find out. From pictures I saw, I couldn't imagine it being reversible but tough to tell in a picture. I had the later version when I had my M8 and loved using it with that camera!

Hi David,

On my later copy (3,42...), the hood with two push tabs is not reversible. I use it with UV/IR filter and anything on top of the filter (like a screw-in hood) will cause vignetting.

I have a 28/2.8 Elmarit v3, that has a similar hood as the earlier 21/2.8, with two metal pins, which grip/rotate into two rails/grooves inside the hood. That hood doesn't reverse either.

That being said, it's pretty safe to use the "Mandler 21" without hood, see also http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152649.

Roland.

Hi Roland,

Thank you for this. I had the later lens, similar to yours without pins, and was able to reverse the hood when carrying in my bag or storing it.
But just so I understand, with your lens and UV/IR filter, do you get vignetting with your Leica hood on? I am wondering why you would use a screw on hood.

No vignetting wth the original hood and filter, David, I was just experimenting with other alternatives.

Thank you

Thank you

Thank you for the clarification Rolland and thank you Ronald- this is very helpful. When I had my 21 Elmarit, vignetting was not an issue either.
