Hi All,

I've got a nice Canon 35mm F2, and I use it quite a bit. I've been wanting one of the original M2-vintage Leitz 35mm lenses, to fill the gap in my set. I also have the 50mm f2 Rigid, and the V1 90mm F2. I have M2, M5, and M4-2, which of course are perfect for the 35mm focal length. Years ago I had a V1 35mm F2 Summicron but I believe they have now become a bit too pricy for me.

Here is my new (beater) M-mount 35mm F2.8 Summaron:

From the same dealer that I bought the M2 and M5. Looks a little dusty, but should clean up OK.

Congrats !

Mine just arrived (today, box yet to be opened) from Colorado. I took the pristine glass from an RF version (with broken eyes) and John vS put it into a spare M2 focus mount he had :)

These are very very good lenses. Similar in characteristics to the Summicron v3, IMO. Surprisingly thin DOF.

They did go quite up in price, after even Ken Rockwell discovered them :)

Cheers,

Roland.

very nice. I have a canon 35/2.8 which is contemporary to the M2 and summaron but I would like a leica 35 summaron for the same reason you did, just because. I am glad I didn't see that one because I am going on vacation next week. maybe an early summicron, v2 or 3 some day, or a summaron.

I go on vacation tomorrow with M4, Summaron 35/2.8, classic Elmar 50/2.8 and Elmar 90. I agree the Summaron and Summicron v3 have similar rendition. The Summaron wins on ergonomics and sheer beauty - if you don't mind infinity locks and shiny chrome. :) My copy is LTM:

Nice! I started with the LTM version, but found myself wanting to get closer (and discovered the LTM version is somewhat rare and collectible) so I bought one in M-mount to use. (The LTM is in nicer shape -- I should sell it.)

These are great lenses. I also have the Canon 35/2.8 and the Konica UC-Hexanon 35/2. If I had to keep only one, it would probably be the Summaron.

A nice and reliable combination for travel and not to heavy. :)

I have the 1:3.5 Summaron in LTM and is a nice and tiny lens, quite sharp stopped down.

I have it with eyes for my M3...love it. If it'd focus properly without the eyes, though, I'd seriously consider removing them and using a CV mini 35/28 external finder.

As it stands, my eyes are busted, but I scored a new set on auction for $50!

i agree about the blacks Helen :) this is without any photoshop except for resizing.

In my lens comparison [with Roland's invaluable help] of about 30 lenses in the range 35mm-40mm, the Summaron 35mm/2.8 was one of the top choices by people inspecting the posted images in that thread. The asking price of the lens seems to have increased after the thread!

The 35f2.8 is one of the "unsung heroes" of Leica lenses. In many ways a better lens than the Summicron from the same era. It is better in close than the 35f2 vI and I always like the way it separates dark and bright tones.
It is also easier to find in good shape than the 35f2 as the Summicron often was bought by pro's who needed the speed and the Summaron by amateur shooters who kept stuff more pristine.
Back when I had to shoot color - the 35f2.8 was my preferred 35 as it gave a better color rendition - slightly muted with high contrast Kodachrome.
I still have one and occasionally it goes on a M2 with some Pan F or Plus X for sunny walks.

I just unpacked my new 35mm F2.8 Summaron, here M5 checks it out. Matching build quality, lens is from 1958. M2 will have to wait:
