35mm Summicron ASPH stock hood, ugh.

I know it's been said before but as a newcomer to this amazing lens, wow is that hood bad. Pops off too easily and feels flimsy because of this. I love it's slim profile though so in the process of deciding if I'll source the 12504 or not or even go the Overgaard route. The size won't bother me I think but it's really too bad about the stock one. Nice to see they addressed this issue with the new one though.

Anyone else have tips for using the stock one otherwise? I'm sure this isn't an issue for everyone or if it's even an overall issue and maybe over-exaggerated, but some insight would be much appreciated.

On a positive note, everything else about the version 1 ASPH is phenomenal. I got the chrome one so it's the heavier brass one but it feels so good in hand and in use.

I've never had a problem with that hood, it's always held securely, tabs fit just right. I think its a 12526, right? Are you sure it's on all the way?

I'm just about to going out shooting with my M2 and cron asph. Never had an issue with the stock hood. I do like it very much actually. Cheers. Giulio

I have the stock hood as well, zero issues... I've dropped my M6 with the 35 and the hood nothing... just small scuff marks, no cracks nothing... It hit concrete pretty good...

Make sure it snaps into place... You might be putting it on wrong...

The hood has to snap in place on the lens... The words leica on the hood have to be facing up..

I've owned this lens with stock hood for oh close to 20 years now... never an issue with the stock hood... That's why I'm questioning whether is attached correctly... Or its possible you got a defective hood...

I'm another one who has never had trouble with the Summicron 35 Asph hood falling off.

So on travel, my ONA bag hit something and detached bringing down my entire kit onto the ground inside the bag. I had the stock hood on as I always did. And believe it or not, it saved my 35 Cron along with my 240. The plastic hood imploded which acted as crumple zone and saved my 35 Cron. My 35 Cron came out practically unscathed! Had the hood been the metal one, my Cron would be messed up and a goner by now. Use the stock hood. Trust in the stock hood! Some day, it may very well save your Cron's life as my it did mine.

Stock hood works great. You do realize that there are two notches in the lens that projections from the hood fit into, right?
Also, you need to squeeze the mounting buttons tight, to expand the metal catches inside the hood mounting ring. These metal projections fit into a groove milled into the front of the lens, and actually lock the hood in place.

That's the reason why people keep asking to photograph how you have mounted the hood on - to see if you've done it right. In typical Leica fashion, the tolerances are tight. If you don't have it placed perfectly, it's not mounted. If it's perfectly mounted, but falls off, then you need to see if the metal catches do spring inwards when you release the buttons. If the spring is broken, it may explain your problems.

Chuffed Cheese, Robert has covered everything I was thinking of in his post quoted above. I have the hood and just can't see what the problem could be if the hood is mounted correctly. Are you sure your hood is mounted correctly?
