40mm Lens with 35mm Frameline

I am torn between getting a 50mm and the new CV 40mm lens. I use a R2 and it has no 40mm frameline and I have heard so much about how versatile is the 40mm focal length. Could a 40mm lens be used with a 35mm frameline of a R2?

Peter, yes.

35mm framelines are only marginally wider than 40mm framelines would be.

Have you used a 40mm lens with 35mm frameline? Did you encounter problem of framing at close distance such as cropping of the top of the head of a person?

I did, and I haven't experienced any problems. Remember that most framelines are smaller (include less) than the film frame. So, using 40mm with 35mm framelines is IMO no problem.

Thanks very much for your explanation. I know what to buy now for Christmas! :p

Peter, Remy's explanation was excellent. I have used my 40mm Rokkor on my M2, and have to hold the frame-selector lever to one side to get the 35mm frames to appear. This is a bit awkward, but I don't want to file my lens's mount to avoid that. So I have not used it on the Leica a lot, but it otherwise worked fine. I just keep in mind there is little or no excess captured beyond the frame.

Me too, no problem. Just pay attention to composition and don't expect to see anything outside of the framelines on the film.

Once again, thanks Doug and Rover for sharing with me your experience. RFF is great, I would expect the worse case scenario if I should dare to ask such question in other forum.

Photos taken with this lens are starting to pop up in galleries. I saw some from a link at Photo.net a couple days ago. The images looked really sharp, bokah was good too, but there were no situations with pinpoint lights in the background or other effects that would lead to "bad bokah." So far so good from what I have seen.
