Has anyone used 42 mm Zeiss lenses (contax?) on a R-D1?
Adapters seem very expensive ($350 from Cameraquest), but do they work? Is it worth it?
One adapter could be shared amongst several lenses, perhaps
Cheers

If you're talking about lenses with an "M-42" mount (as used on Praktica and later Pentax) these are SLR lenses and will not have any provision for rangefinder coupling. The reason the $350 CameraQuest adapter is expensive is that it includes a precision coupling cam and ring that lets you measure the distance with your camera rangefinder, then transfer the setting from a scale to the focusing scale on the lens. You can buy a cheaper adapter without the coupling cam, but then you'll have to set focusing by guessing or measuring the distance.

My feeling is that this is so much bother that it's not worth the expense of an adapter to use these lenses on an R-D 1. There are hundreds of high-quality lenses to use on the R-D 1 that do couple to the rangefinder, and either don't need an adapter at all (M-mount RF lenses) or need only a simple, much less expensive adapter (L-39 screwmount RF lenses.)

If you really like the look of Zeiss lenses, you either can buy the current Carl Zeiss M-mount lenses, or watch for used "Carl Zeiss Jena" lenses from the former East Germany in L-39 screwmount, and use them via simple screw-to-M adapters.
