I'm thinking of picking up or trading my 85/2 for a 50/1.8 but would like to know the difference between the chrome model and the later black one. Are this optically the same, are the coatings different, is the chrome model larger and heaver ? Thanks in advance for the advice.

For the most part, I believe that the optical formulas are the same between the black and chrome flavors of Canon lenses. Also, the black ones tend to be a bit lighter weight. Don't know about the coatings though. I have a couple of each, and don't see any difference in perfomance on film. Weights, dimensions and other data available from Canon museum site

Thanks, have you noticed the chome one being more prone to flare?

I have the chrome, and I've not had any flare problems, even shooting into the light without a hood. I just looked through a bunch of shots I took in various lighting conditions and I didn't see a problem. I realized I need to use this lens more, in fact. The out of focus effects are beautiful.

I like my 85 too. You sure you want to trade it away?

I have a chrome lens and a black one.

Chrome has 10 blades in aperature, minimum f16, focus scale in feet.

Black has 9 blades in aperature, minimum f22, focus scale in meters, and seems lighter than the chrome version.

I use a lens hood on both of them and do not notice any flare problems.

I've already sold it in the classified's, just decided to keep the Elmar-C 90/4 for its size and weight and don't need two. But I have a chrome 50 coming, thanks for advice.
