50 1.8 lens hood.

That's a hard one of course but do not despair there are options.

I have a couple of options in fact. The first is a hood I bought on the internet marked "for converter EEE"

Here is one here (but sold). Never the less, they appear on the net from time to time.

Its a 42mm clamp fit and works fine on the black and chrome version of the Canon 50mm f1.8. From memory it cost me maybe $35 or thereabouts. A very nice piece of kit.

My next option is a but more expensive unless you luck out. Leica made a polarizer accessory for their 39mm lenses from the 1950s. It had a hood, a swing out arm and a polarising filter (which now days is often damaged or degraded - but can be easily removed, leaving the rest of the apparatus intact - a rather nice clamp on hood that also fits the Canon 50mm. :^)

This is the thing here but it can sometimes be picked up a little more cheaply in user condition (or much much more in perfect condition). I was lucky and got one as part of a deal with a lens I purchased so effectively it cost me zip.

The final option is your best bet as its far away the cheapest and works....... I found a rather nice hood on eBay in 43mm screw fit. Of course that means I needed to also find a step filter from 40mm to 43mm. Which I have done and the aggregate cost for both is about $20.

Here is the hood.

Or you may prefer something more modern looking (But I think the above version looks more authentic and being deeper is also more effective at doing its job) But here are some options in case you feel so inclined.

And here is the adapter.

Good luck - all of these work.

Hmm, honestly, I don't know what the two obvious choices are...

I use a 40,5mm vented hood with a 40-40,5mm step-up ring (both heavystar).

The obvious choices being looking for the original Canon hood made for the 1.8, VI series.

I think I will take Peter's suggestion and get a generic 43mm hood and an adapter.

U.N. makes and currently sells a couple of 40.5 lens hoods...

Their 'metal wide lens hood' which might be modified for your longer FL (?)...

my mistake... I thought it was 40.5mm that you needed... U.N. does sell a 40mm rubber hood, but not a 40mm metal wide :-(

... 40mm rubber version

I use the Canon EEE clamp on

These hoods are very nice arent they! (Statement not a question :^)) Canon certainly made top quality gear back in the day. (Some would say they still do of course).

The hood I referred to in this context is a "funnel" shaped one like the early leica hoods. I also have one with the same EEE designation with "cylindrical" sides for tele lenses - I bought this because thought this would be useful for a lens like the tele elmarit (although I have an original leica hood for it, for casual use I prefer to not use that one as its in pristine condition).
