Its a 42mm clamp fit and works fine on the black and chrome version of the Canon 50mm f1.8. From memory it cost me maybe $35 or thereabouts. A very nice piece of kit.
My next option is a but more expensive unless you luck out. Leica made a polarizer accessory for their 39mm lenses from the 1950s. It had a hood, a swing out arm and a polarising filter (which now days is often damaged or degraded - but can be easily removed, leaving the rest of the apparatus intact - a rather nice clamp on hood that also fits the Canon 50mm. :^)
This is the thing here but it can sometimes be picked up a little more cheaply in user condition (or much much more in perfect condition). I was lucky and got one as part of a deal with a lens I purchased so effectively it cost me zip.
The final option is your best bet as its far away the cheapest and works....... I found a rather nice hood on eBay in 43mm screw fit. Of course that means I needed to also find a step filter from 40mm to 43mm. Which I have done and the aggregate cost for both is about $20.
Or you may prefer something more modern looking (But I think the above version looks more authentic and being deeper is also more effective at doing its job) But here are some options in case you feel so inclined.
These hoods are very nice arent they! (Statement not a question :^)) Canon certainly made top quality gear back in the day. (Some would say they still do of course).
The hood I referred to in this context is a "funnel" shaped one like the early leica hoods. I also have one with the same EEE designation with "cylindrical" sides for tele lenses - I bought this because thought this would be useful for a lens like the tele elmarit (although I have an original leica hood for it, for casual use I prefer to not use that one as its in pristine condition).
