Just when you thought the pixel chase was over, along comes Canon.

Yeah, it is. But not surprising cosidering the pixel densities on smaller sensor cameras. To me It seemed like a matter of time till the processing power of ff cameras caught up to what can be packed onto a ff sensor.

And if it's anything like the 1Ds Mark II, will highlight all the shortcomings of the Canon lenses for use at this resolution... Prompting Mark III versions to be issued in short order.

My Hasselblad 6x6 and the Imacon Photo scanner do in the 50MP range as well so I'm not impressed.
And, who needs 50MP from a FF DSLR anyway.

Virtually none of the Canon zooms can resolve at this resolution at working apertures before diffraction kicks in anyways. The new 16-35 maybe, and almost certainly a number of the Super-teles, but who needs 50mp when shooting with a 200-400?
Nikon has this same issue with the D800/D810 and Sony the A7r. The 14-24 barely gets sharp enough in the corners for the D800E at f5.6, yet at f10-11 there is already quite noticeable diffraction. I won't bet on any of the E mount zooms having enough resolution for the A7r either. The 55 1.8, on the other hand, does make for a great combo beyond f2.8.

I don't shoot digital so this means nothing to me.
But really, how many pixels do you need? I'll be for most applications 10 or 12 do very nicely.
And besides, after the all the Digivolk Pixelphiles stop pissing and moaning about how they'll not be able to live with the piece of dreck they currently own when this camera is released, you'll not see any difference in their photos anyway.
More pixels never made anyone a better photographer.

I wish Canon would do their own version of Sony's A7S. Great ISO performance, around 12-16 megapixels, full frame.

We saw the phenomenon of lenses not being up to the sensor with the Nikon D2X as well. As it wasn't full frame, the light rays were more perpendicular to the sensor so the faults in many great lenses didn't show up in the farther edges of the field as they do on a full frame sensor. The D2X can still show great deficiencies in many but the very best lenses and that sensor is incredibly sharp.
On another pixel note, my Mamiya 6 negatives scanned in my Nikon LS8000 yield about a 38MP scan.

The megapickle count rises while printing/printer technology remains as it was 5 years ago. Funny stuff

as long as they feel the need to count the 0.6, they'll want more

Who needs these big files? Maybe some landscape shooters who like to make large prints. Or people who own one lens and like to crop. However the talk about better colour filter array with more accurate colour reproduction might make it a better wedding shooter. Only speculation until real world results are in..

They must be shedding lab coats and dancing in the aisles. Zeiss glass + 50 mpx canon = landscape and architecture joy, just to name an obvious couple of applications, especially with wider DR and improved color/tonality. We might even begin to see Schneider and Rodenstock consider producing lenses for a camera like this one.
Maybe you or I don't need it, but the people buying A7r's and D810's needing high mpx and who may want to access canon's excellent upgraded TS-E lenses, for example, will be pleased. You want detail from small format? This is the tool. And if you don't, downsize in camera using the crop options. I wouldn't be surprised that its output isn't all that far off the tech camera mark while there'd be no contest in terms of flexibility.
Re lenses, if you follow them, Canon has been not so quietly releasing significantly improved versions of many of their zooms and primes over the last few years, presumably to be ready for the requirements of its forthcoming higher resolution cameras. While Sony offers powerhouse sensors in meh bodies and limited native glass or leaves the user to figure out 3rd party adapted non-native glass, Canon understands the attraction of a one-stop integrated system for bodies and glass. Especially for pros who mistrust complicated, fiddly "alt" solutions to working glass and bodies.
The only real problem will be its price ...

i guess you can just 'point in a general direction' with this thing. crop down to the prize winner and SHAZAM! World Press.

Wake me up when Canon starts using proper analog-to-digital converters throughout their DSLR line.
