50 new ways to stuff up your pictures....

Well, maybe not 50. But I am learning the hard way that view cameras (my new/old Linhof Tech IV) give you no help whatsoever, all the little safety features and things that you've come to expect in 35mm or medium format aren't there.

Put 2 rolls thru it yesterday, so far my tally is (and this is just what I realised at the time, bound to be more when I get the film back):
- Take shot with dark slide not removed and then wind on: 1
- ditto, but realise so be able to salvage the frame: 2
- Forget to wind on and hence double expose: 1
- Remove back without dark slide in: 1 (at least I only started to take it off before I realised so hopefully I've only lost 1-2 frames)

And people use view cameras for fun???? 😕

Results to come in a day or two. But I did have a lot of fun; I can't see the Linhof becoming my everyday camera, but I suspect it might be staying around for special occasions.....

Tim,

You have a few more mistakes that you can make when using cut sheet film holders and using the ground glass to focus.

1. Focusing at large aperture of f8 and forgetting to stop down to f22 after you have loaded film holder.

2. Forgetting to reverse the film holder dark slide so that you know this side has been exposed.

3. Shooting shots on empty film holders.

4. Not marking film holders with film type and ASA, then a few weeks later exposing them at ISO 400 when you have ISO 125 film loaded. (and vice versa).

5. Not pulling dark slide, same as with a roll film back.

6. Not replacing dark slide and removing film holder.

I am sure there are many more, don't ask me how I know about the above mistakes.

😀 I'm sure that over the next few weeks/months I'm gonna make all of them......

I have already replied in another thread started by Tim, but I will go here too.

I have 2 wasted frames on my first roll of 120 in my Graflex (that I know of). I have double exposed with my Yashica-A many times, as with my Ensign Selfix-20 and Ensign Ful-Vue.

But you just have got to love those large negs! One thing I like about the Ensign Commando is there is a catch that prevents double exposure when the camera is set in the 4.5x6 format. I have to get this baby out and use her.

Hehe, ive managed to double expose one shot with my Yeshica 635 on my first 120 roll. I figure if you havnt done it once, then you are missing out on the experience 😉 The double exposed shot turned out rather well too 🙂
