Literally ...

The rewind crank on my Bessa R2 fell off today after I had rewound a roll of film. Fortunately I was indoors (Starbucks) and was able to put the tiny crank, screws, spring etc into a film canister to carry home with me.

I assume it's not too hard to reconnect though the screws look ever so teensy ... I think one of the screws had worked its way loose.

Any words of caution before Gino of the Five Thumbs sets to work on this project??

I'd suggest using a tiny amount of fingernail polish on the screw when putting it back together. That will prevent it from vibrating loose again but won't prevent easy disassembly if it becomes necessary. Spar varnish also works well. Both stay pliable but keep the screw tight.

I'll hang on to that other thumb then, Frank 😀

Peter, I didn't know my Bessa was in the same league as Leicas ... guess nothing's perfect!

Walker, thanks! If I get it back together again, I'll apply a little fingernail polish

Damn ! I was going to say 'see, that would never happen with a Leica' 😛

What it's sure is it would never happen with a Canon P lol ! 😀

Nor with a medium format camera.

Really? I see a 'Blad on the distant horizon then. BTW, I was shown a 501CM + A12 back + 80/2.8 Planar for slightly more than a price of an M3 body.

Man, this forum is the worst place to be when you're suffering from SAGAS (Severe Accute Gear Acquisition Syndrome)!

Wha?? You have to rewind with a Hasselblad? (Pardon my ignorance, never used one!)
It's worse than that. You also have to respool the film from one back to another before you can process it ...

[kidding of course ... ]

Hmmmm. This episode has left me downright cranky. I see a Hasselblad on my horizon too 😀

Fixed!!

Fixed!!

I've reattached the spring, the collar that fits over the spring and the crank itself. It's a job that requires four hands, so my lovely wife helped. It's necessary (I think) to keep the rewind post popped up in order to work on the assembly, and it wants to slide down every time it gets touched.

Clear nail polish applied at the end. Everything's working fine again.

It's a bit of a flimsy thing -- a weak point. Ya'll with Bessas might want to check that the screws are tight and apply some nail polish as a proactive measure ...

I hope the Bessaflex doesn't have the same weakness. I am thinking of getting one as they are M42 screwmount and will take my 20 pounds of assorted Takumar lenses. (OOPS! Heresy to mention an SLR, but a mitigating factor in my sentencing might be the fact that I have two rangefinders - Olympus XA, Yashica Electro 35 GSN - and a Kiev 4A on the way).

Ted, I don't think it's a major weakness, but something to be aware of. I totally understand about the Bessaflex. If I still owned a bunch of Super-Taks I'd be first in line for one. I think everyone on the forum (except Joe) owns an SLR or two...or more...

Naw ... you're too busy cornering the market on Canons to get sidetracked into these other formats 😀

do you think i have an unnatural affinity for canon cameras?

maybe i should force myself to use other brands.

would it really hurt so much to venture over the line into the dark side?

maybe an m2 with a nice 35 summicron....lala lala la...
